aftermarket doors and fenders?

I am thinking of replacing the doors and front fenders on my pick-up and was wondering which of the companies making fenders and doors would you guys recommend?

Re: aftermarket doors and fenders?

Although I have yet to purchase any body panels or sheet metal. I have heard Early Classic Enterprises is a good company. You could try goodmark but I think there pretty high price. I have heard lmc is not very good quality. You could try chevy duty or brothers. Like I said I have not purchased any sheet metal yet so my opinion may not count.
You could try the review section on this site. You may find some info there.
Good luck

That is something that has never made sense to me. Why would they make the investment in tooling, marketing, etc. and put out an inferior product? Why not just bump up the material a bit and have a factory-quality product? How much more could it possibly cost?

Re: aftermarket doors and fenders?

Most of what I have seen advertises that they are the same gauge as original. Of course Goodmark is supposed to be exactly like original....all I know is when I was into 60's Mustangs any repro sheetmetal I bought was junk and didn't fit whatsoever. I'm leary of buying it, but from what I've seen people seem to have good luck with it on these trucks..

Re: aftermarket doors and fenders?

I have new doors from GMC Pauls and a new front cap from Mother Truckers. The fit isn't perfect but with a little work can be. Both places were a pleasure to deal with and had great prices.

Re: aftermarket doors and fenders?

Put me in the original sheetmetal camp. With this board and ebay and such, it's so much easier than it used to be to find good, rust-free original parts. And you'll probably save a little money, too.

Re: aftermarket doors and fenders?

I can only recomend Goodmark. After trying a lot of different companies when rebuilding a friends '75 Blazer, the only ones that fit without an issue was Goodmark. They are a little spendy, but since he had a company name, he became a "dealer" for them, so now I don't have to pay retail for parts.

I have also used thier stuff on a Camaro poject and it was the same as the stock stuff we replaced.

You do get what you pay for on sheetmetal.

you will find that there are only one or two companies that make those panels. Goodmark and the other companies are pure resellers

Best bet is to price some local companies and save on shipping, or try some of the board retailers and get a good deal online

Re: aftermarket doors and fenders?

I've got goodmark doors and fenders (or really "tri-plus" parts). Haven't installed them yet. I bought them from a board vendor and picked them up in person in lawerenceville, GA. Save me $$$$$$$$$ doing this. I'm fixin to have a LARGE vet bill for my dog, so it will be another month or two until I can get around to installing them. In my honest opinion I can't tell the difference in fender weight or shape. The edges and lines aren't quite as sharp as original but with a little tweaking should match up well. THe doors, to me, were a good bit lighter, but they are still made of a decent gage metal and still have a good weight to them. I really hope to have them on the truck by may

Re: aftermarket doors and fenders?

These are the doors I bought from Goodmake (made by Tri-Plus). The last pic is the sealant I put in the seam, it still needs to be sanded... but they are full doors. I think I paid $260 each? Still have to get them on the truck, but the peace of mind of never seeing rust bubbles again (I rust-encapsulated and "undercoated" the crap out of the door insides) and they do have 3 drainholes at the bottom like stock.

Re: aftermarket doors and fenders?

New or perfect used, and from what I can see, even in dry AZ perfect used is an oxymoron, buy new and never have to worry! That being said I intend to strip my nearly perfect AZ sheetmetal and put it on ebay to defray the cost of new. I am headed to Tucson this weekend to buy a truckload from Rick's trucks out of Phoenix and save the shipping and no TAX!!! Here I come.

Re: aftermarket doors and fenders?

I have both drivers and passenger side aftermarket doors (goodmark). I don't have any pics right now, but they fit fine with a little work. Two things to note about them......they have the hole for the wing window (like the 1972 trucks came with), not sure if you can get them without or not. Also, where the door panel bolts on at the bottom is not threaded.....I ended up using nutserts to fix this. Not big issues, but just wanted you to know.

Re: aftermarket doors and fenders?

The fenders have really improved, as we are on our third generation of them. They are now full weight and thickness.
The TGs are very good...not quite as heavy, but close enough that they look and work great...unless you are dropping 1,000 lb engines on them...and yes you can stand in the middle of them...although I don't know why you would want to.
Hoods are very good...not perfect... but the cowl hoods look so cool it is OK. Run a stock hood if you don't want the cowl and stay away from the stock replacements! I have never sold one.
Doors...oh those ******doors. They are too thin, don't fit well and sometimes require the top part to be cut and sectioned. I wish the manufacturer (I am sure there is only one tooling for these) would at least use thicker metal. I stock them and sell them because if I don't a few of my customers will just buy them down the street or order them shipped in. We discuss them a lot before I sell them.
I can't find enough premium OEM sheet metal for all of you that want original, so we have to run some repro. The repro carries a bad "rep" from the first pieces. It is getting better, but it sure seems slow at times.

Re: aftermarket doors and fenders?

Here is my $.02 on the after market doors. I've installed a few new doors in the last couple of years for people and none of them were in "ready to use" state, they all had issues: lighter metal=more dents right out of box, visible pinch/die/form marks, runs in the primer coating, window opening gap was noticebly larger than OEM(might be fixed by now) and just over all poor quality. I couldn't just "scuff and shoot" I had to spend time fixing new doors

Personally, I would rather refinish original doors, even if they required patching, instead of using new doors.

Now the fenders and hoods are a completely different story. I really like the quality and wouldn't hesitate to use them.

Re: aftermarket doors and fenders?

The repop doors are crap---goodmark included. the upper body curve doesn't line up with the cab at all. new out of the box the goodmark had stamp inperfections right in the middle of the door from the factory--obviously no inspection for quality. Fenders and tailgates are ok but don't expect equal to original. Even with NOS, expect som work to get the fit, finish, alignment right.
