Heater core removal with factory air?

First off, Thanks to all members on this board. I just completed a frame off restoration with my 16 year old son on a 71 shorty (his first truck). We started with zero mechanical ability and with the help of this board we were able to by parts,learn to weld,paint and generally fix everything.
We put her on the road today, passed state inspection with raves and lots of compliments. It felt great.
anyway on our maiden voyage the heater core blew. do I remove this from inside the cab. It has factory ac?

Im pretty sure you pull the heater core from the inside with A/C cab.

Yes pull it from the inside you have to take off s-duct and the floor heater outlet pretty easy really.I did mine in an hr or so(malted beverages are optional)

For A/c removal, for heater core work. Take passenger side wheel off inner fender and unbolt the nuts under the air box in the bottom of it. Disconnect heater hoses and other misc. stuff loose. I just finished this project myself. You may be able to leave the outside box on the fire wall but I wanted to check everything while I had it off. The heater core is in the passenger side coner inside the box that comes out from the cab.

I'm certain that someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that there is one screw that holds the core in that comes from the outside of the box under the hood. I remember having to drop the inner fender to access it. This only applies to the A/C trucks, though.

I had 2 screws from the cab side that had nuts on the fire wall side that aren't seen without taking the inner fender off. When you pull the box out of the cab there's nothing holding the outside box up in place except one sheet metal screw right near the fan. I wanted to resaeal mine and check for gaps around the A/C evaperator too.

In many cases, it probably pays to do the total job of removing both boxes if they haven't been removed before -especially if the A/C is not operational. You will have years of leaves, pine needles and probably mouse stuff inside the inner box with your blower fan chewed by Mickey and friends which will have put it out of balance. All this crud significantly reduces air flow -heater and A/C effectiveness. Best if done by removing pas side inner fender --then it will come out pretty quick. You can usually do the whole thing in a couple of hours. Biggest problem will be reinstalling the glove box cardboard which if original --will break into about a dozen pieces. Be especially aware of the importance of the two grounds--one off the blower motor and the other off the A/C fan relay mounted on the box just below the glove box.

Wish I had been a board member years ago when I replaced my heater core... luckily (?!?), my mind has erased much of the painful memory About all I remember is it was a PITA.... I did not remove the inner fender (factory air).

I dropped the innere fender. It took 5 minutes and save alot of cussin and agravation. There is 4 sheet metal nuts on the outside and 2 on the inside.
