3973487X sbc head question......again
OK.....these are the heads that are on my 72 now. As you all probably know, I am going to get the motor rebuilt soon. Should I have these heads rebuilt or go with the Vortecs?
Is this a good casting? Are they good heads? I have seen different sites that say different things about them. Some say they have 1.94" valves, some say 2.02" valves. Anyone know for sure or did they make these heads with both sizes? Here is the info that I got from one site: 3973487X....75cc....2.02....1.60....1971-72 350

1972C10_Ohio,
both sizes are common on alot of castings, only way to know is to measure them on trucks most likely will be smaller valves, if are on passenger engine then could be larger valves turbo fire(passenger/less torque but more hp) vs. hi torque(trucks/torque) good luck ------------------ Randy- Lincoln, IL r68c30@hotmail.com -71 C-10 350/CH465/3.07 -84 Z28 Camaro 5.0L 700R4, 3.73 -84 Firebird SE 2.8L T-5 -82 Firebird 350 4bolt (TBL)/TH350 buy/sell/hoard/trade most any GM vehicle parts of any kind -parting out: '81 Cutlass Supreme Brougham *Paint is overrated © RSS Enterprises 2000 |

487X is a performance head. should be 2.02. the runner length gives good torque. However nothing flows better than a Vortec head, not Edel, or Dart, or Trick. I've seen the numbers, they out do all of them. My pref is the 487's, not a bad head if your looking for a cheaper way to go and something that will last.

The 487x is one of the best open chamber heads and most likely will be 2.02. It was used on Lt-1 low compression motors and possbily some L-82s. If they need to be overhauled, I'd pony up the extra cash and get either some World S/R or if you are building more motor, the sportsmans. Either way go closed chamber since all else being equal on a small block, the small chamber is worth 20hp.

The vortecs are a "good bang for the buck",& looking at flow numbers, they do flow more on the intake side than some, but not the ex side(balance of flow int to ex) is also an important aspect of a good flowing head. I looked at flow numbers, & was caught between Dart Iron Eagle,& Edelbrocks......got the edelbrocks,as aluminum would be a little more "pump fuel freindly" with the comp ratio. they are also good to .575 lift right out of the box.....over .460-.470,& the vortecs will need some work.....69 longhorn.

Depends on there condition. I've been looking for a 487 to replace a bad one that I have. Do you need guides, are the seats cut staight, how are the valves, are they sunk in or is there some grind room left in them. Oh this is my 700th post. Let me know.
