Anybody rejetted their 1406 Edel carb ? What did you find ???

Putting a 1406 on our latest project. This is my first edelbrock, used many holleys before. Most carbs are a little rich so I am assuming some tuning will be needed for best mpg/performance.

What have you done or found out about your 1406 ? Hve you needed to change front or rear jets ? Change rods or springs ???

Just wondering if there are any general tendencies of these carbs to be off in one certain area that usually need changed ?

I know all engine setups are diffferent and I will have to tune to my specific setup. But if I know they are like "always lean in the back" I'll just have a better place to start. Please list any jet sizes or rod numbers, spring color, etc. if you can. Thanks.

I did change both rods and jets. I may have gone one step too far as it sometimes has a lean stumble. I haven't played with it since so it isn't too bad. My mileage went from 11 to 18 on the highway.

Re: Anybody rejetted their 1406 Edel carb ? What did you find ???

Just rejetted mine. The performance shop said put the secondary jets in the primary and then gave me new secondary jets. He said I'd get better performance and better fuel economy. Not sure of the sizes but if you want to know I can check. Havent had it in but one night so not sure of the results yet.

HCHAD18-i wouldnt mind knowing what they did. i think i need to play with my carb to. wont rev above 3k when under a load, thinking its lean on the secondary side. also getting better than 6mpg would be nice.

The jets they gave me for the secondaries are part # 1425. Like I said I havent a whole lot of time to determine how its running but drove it down the street last night and could tell a bit of difference in power. I did get a little stumble though when gassing it quick so I moved the accelerator pump linkage 1 hole closer to the carb.

Re: Anybody rejetted their 1406 Edel carb ? What did you find ???

Did my 1407, easy, 15 min of work. Everything comes out the top, no muss no fuss. I pulled up the jet chart from their website and went two stages lean. I noticed an instant mpg change, later I started to notice a performance change. My plugs were burning themselves up, white colored and electrode wear. Got some new plugs and the engine would actually surge up and down under load. Ordered the set for 1 step lean installed them and everything is good. Mpg gain from rejetting alone was 2.5/3. Jets and rods are cheap. You can order from Jegs or Summit, you have to go to the chart and get the number and then go to a site for the part. They don't ad for individual jets in the cats. One fillup after jetting will pay for them. Steve

Re: Anybody rejetted their 1406 Edel carb ? What did you find ???

I'll be rejetting and rodding mine this week. Still have stock set up on the 1406. But, I'm at 4800 ft and need to set to about 6% leaner for this area.

I'll let you know what happens.

side note: Anyone know if I need to tweak anything else after this swap??

I looke online and Edelbrocks website said it should also have gone with a 1455 metering rods. So I am going to try that too. Just the jet alone and the stock rods might be too lean. I did get to drive it a bit more and the stumble seems to go away once it warms up. Might have to adjust my choke open a little.

Re: Anybody rejetted their 1406 Edel carb ? What did you find ???

My 1406 ran rich with the original jets, I leaned out the primary and secondary jets. As others have said rejetting is cheap and easy to do.

My 1406 was so lean it surged when it was new. Had to step up 2 sizes before the surge went away.

Re: Anybody rejetted their 1406 Edel carb ? What did you find ???

OK, did the change last night. Went with 1426/1456 Jet/Rod Primaries and 1425 on the Secondary jet. It runs a little warmer. And the mid range - 2000 to 3000 rpms - is wide awake now. Sweet passing power. I'll follow up with MPG numbers later.

After my initial trepidations, it was very easy to do. I had to adjust the floats, should be at 7/16. mine were about zero. Be careful re-setting the air horn on the body - fuel needles kept falling out. And installing the jets goes easier with a tapered wooden or bamboo skewer to start the tiny things.

It's worth the time, effort and $$$. I'll update MPG later.

So what MPG did you end up with? I just rejetted my 1406 ( using same jet sizes as you, and changed needle sizes). I'm hoping my mileage improves.

I actually went from an average MPG of 9 to 15!! And, I Passed smog with flying colors on HC's - whereas, last year I squeaked by by 1 point on HC's.

It's a good thing!

Whats your elevation there? I have the same jetting, but at basically sea level here.

Re: Anybody rejetted their 1406 Edel carb ? What did you find ???

QKENUF4U: are you running a 1411 on a 454? If so, mine was lean out of the box, I went 1 stage richer by their book (rod?) and changed the spring richer also (orange?). It's been a while so don't hold me to the rod/orange thing. My plugs were way lean and that helped with power a lot. It feels like I could probably go richer still and be ok, my plugs are still a little lean and I do get a bit of a stumble before I get into the secondaries. I'm changing over to TBI soon so I haven't spent a lot of effort/time tuning this carb, but I do like the ease of tuning for the little bit I've done.
I usually get 8-9 mpg with 3.07 gears, you can get better than 6 but not much with a bbc. If the TBI gets me to the magical land of 10+ I'll be happy.

Ok - last question for now is your vac. advance unit connected to ported or unported?

Great article on vacuum advance here
