Re: Trans Question
when installing new pan weather tranny or oilpan take care not to overtighten the torque is only about 10-12lbs once overtightened a pan will almost always leak do to the bolt holes getting misshapened

Since you got the pan off I would change the filter.

Re: Trans Question
Yes I will change the filter I can get those at any parts store right?
I have never done a th400 same as th350? Any tips? loosen the back of pan first and let it drain, remove pan unbolt filter bolt in new filter bolt on new pan and gasket and refill. Does that about cover it?

Re: Trans Question
On partsamerica and orielly sit they list a thm400 is this the same as the th400? Also they list dacron (745041) and brass media(745042). Which one is best and is there a diference? The pioneer ones are the ones I am looking at as that is what oriellys has.

Re: Trans Question
I've never used the brass media filter, so I can't comment on that. But yes, the TH400 and the THM400 are the same, they just stand for Turbo-Hydramatic or Turbo Hydra-Matic depending on who's writing it out, And yes they came stock in 1968.
Your sequence is correct--no different than the th350. If you haven't bought the aluminum pan you can easily do some work to the steel pan to make it seal better. Most leaks are caused by overtightening of the bolts and that can bend the pan at each bolt hole too. Then you put in a new gasket and no matter what you do it leaks because the pan is bent upward at each or most of the holes. What I always do is clean the pan and lay a straight edge across it and see where the bolt holes are sitting high, then I take a ball peen hammer to the holes with high spots until the pan is flat all around. I put a block of wood under it or lay it on the edge of a bench. Then lay the straightedge back on and check it over and over again until your convinced it is flat again. Then, don't get all strrongarm when you torque it down...just get the gasket compressed just a little and in a uniform sequence around the pan.

Re: Trans Question
Thanks catseye. I got the pan already on order, decided to just do it and get an aluminum one so I wont warp it again plus it has a drain plug. Also there was a big puddle in the garage and the wife told me to fix it, I said I need a new pan she said what ever so long as it stops leaking. So I thought I would take advantage of the situation. (lol)

Wish my wife would tell me to fix things! She just gives me permission. I am going to go with an aluminum pan as well. They have the thick flange that prevents the holes from getting unlevel so badly, even if you do slightly evertighten. I have had a problem with this on my truck since I put an aftermarket chrome pan on (junk) and would have stuck with the stocker had I known the issues. I also had a problem with this on my '94 Camaro - but a different sort. The bolts wanted to back out on me (too loose) letting it leak. So I had to tighten it more than I wanted too. Hopefully, the pan was better than others, and could handle the torque. I didn't synch them hard, but I did have to put more than 10-12 lbs on them.

Re: Trans Question
I think I have the right filter. a guy I know gave me one said it would work. It is retangular in shape looks to have one mounting hole. has a hole on the end with a rubber groumet in it looks like it slides on a pickup tube. Does this sound right.
