Eaton Pinion Nut wont budge :-( Ideas??
Hi All,
Well my new oil seal arrived to stop my pinion leaking, downside is I have tried for 3 hours to remove the pinion nut with no luck I tried my air wrench, 3foot long breaker bar, even had this on with an extra tube still no luck! Also but the bar on and tried to push the burb so the axle might undo it. Im really struggling now as I need to get it fixed, May be a dumb question...is it a LH or RH thread? Cheers

Re: Eaton Pinion Nut wont budge :-( Ideas??
its a regular thread, just real tight, hasnt been off in 30 plus years. You need to shock it hard to get it broke loose, it's hard to get leverage when you are under it, but remember, you can pull harder than you can push, so make sure you are on the correct side of it and pull down with a cheater pipe on your breaker bar. you may have to jack up one side so the handle sticks out from under it far enough to stand on it or even stomp down on it. if you need to keep it from turning, put the ujoint keepers on and wedge something into the yoke that will catch the frame so it cant turn. if all else fails do like the coyote and purchase a pinion nut blaster from ACME. best of luck, ron

Re: Eaton Pinion Nut wont budge :-( Ideas??
You do know that you need to get the pinion nut back on the exact number of turns that you take it off? This is what sets the depth of the pinion in the ring gear. Too loose or too tight and they will be junk in a matter of miles.

I thought it was a bolt into the housing? If so then heat the housing and the bolt backs out? If you heat the bolt and ice the housing the bolt expands and the housing shrinks and it becomes even tighter, if I have this wrong (which I might as I have never personally worked on one of these) LMK, but I have seen picts and if memory serves me correctly the advice I gave is correct. |

Re: Eaton Pinion Nut wont budge :-( Ideas??
While a go I took mine to a big rig shop and the guy there heated the nut and rapidly added water until it was cool to the touch then a torque wrench till the nut berly moved wrote the force down and then a 1/2" impact from there. New nut with some anti sieze to keep things easy for the gear change.

Re: Eaton Pinion Nut wont budge :-( Ideas??
i did mine today, man was that sucker on there, i had my whole chunk out tried holding the yoke with a big pipe wrench and turning nut with a 3/4 "breaker bar. yea right.so i got the bob-cat set the bucket down on the pip wrench slipped a pipe over the breaker bar and lifted the bobcat. so i tried heating the nut with a little propane tourch and adding weight to the bobcat bucket, still no go oh i forgot to mention the 600 ft/lb inpact that did nothing. so i broke out the blue wrench and heated her up good then she finialy broke loose in i finished her off with the impact. factory service manual makes no mention of marking and reinstaling in same posistion for an eaton but i did mark it for referance, it says toquqe it to 200 ft/lbs.itsays nothing about setting or ajusting backlash but lists .005-.008 as perfered and min of .003 and max of.012". is backlash ajusted by shimming or what? and how do you check it? i havent assembeled it or checked it yet because i need to get a speedy sleave for my yoke

Re: Eaton Pinion Nut wont budge :-( Ideas??
chiltons truck manual has a very detailed eaton overhaul section, it seems the pinion yoke nut does not set pinion depth it states 325-400 ft/lbs fo 11/8 pinion shaft

Re: Eaton Pinion Nut wont budge :-( Ideas??
Hmm interesting info about the nut not setting pinion etc.
Still trying to get the nut off I even jacked the burb up set ul a breaker bar on the nut then slowly lowered the burb back down hoping the weight would add enough leverage on the bar and then undo the nut.....Err no chance...breaker bar just took the full weight and movement from the nut.... Also used my air gun still no use... Think its off to a truck garage!

Did you try some PB Blaster or Deep Creep on the threads. I swear those two oils work good on frozen stuff.

Re: Eaton Pinion Nut wont budge :-( Ideas??
You will have to heat it to loosen the locktite that is on the nut threads.

Re: Eaton Pinion Nut wont budge :-( Ideas??
If you hit the side of the nut with an air chisle or just a hammer and chisle, it will in time loosen. Something else to try is put a breaker baron the nut, with the bar on somthing solid, and push or pull the truck, mabee even hitting the end of the bar and soccet with a BFH (big hammer) Be sure to take precautions not to get run over. I have yet to have a nut, or bolt beat me. If you have any more troubles bring it by and I'll get it off,,, NO CHARGE

Re: Eaton Pinion Nut wont budge :-( Ideas??
englishrodder, Just got back from Randy's Ring and Pinion. That nut is torqued to 175 ft lbs. After 30 + yrs you will need to soak it with some good penatrating(sp) oil for a couple of day then heat it up. Also contact a machine shop and see if they have any pentatrating wax that also works.
If all fails go down to the local pub and find someone alot larger than you to help.LOL. Good luck
