Well, my dad's truck finally died...
Yup, he was on his way to work when his choke light came on, the engine died and the oil went everywhere. We tried to see from where, but we could see from where Well, when I got there to pick him up (Hour and a half drive) he tried to start it up, but the starter was no good. We replaced it, but the truck was still a no go, the engine appeared to be locked up. He tried to turn in from the front of the engine, and sure enough, it would not budge. I guess it is time for an engine replacement??

Could it have came from a busted oil pressure line or sending unit at the back of the block by the HEI? Try turning it from the torque converter/flexplate. I've had better luck there than at the front. At the front you have to deal with the belts taking out more of your energy.

Re: Well, my dad's truck finally died...
That's one I can't understand about these trucks. When I retired mine it had very poor oil pressure to the point of where everytime I turned a corner or came to a hard stop the choke light would come on as a oil light. Can any of you guys explain this? I know pressure was low because when engine was at operating temp it would just read 25psi at idle.

Was there enough oil in the pan? It shouldnt drop oil pressure just for the sake of turning a hard corner or stopping very quickly.

Re: Well, my dad's truck finally died...
Wow, thanks for that link, El Gracho. We really were at a loss as to why the choke light came on. That seems to clear it up.
So what exactly happened to make it loose all of its pressure like that? Definitely something major??? I am not sure if he has tried to look any further as to where the oil was released through and I have not had a chance to go over there yet with a chance to crawl under it. When we do, we will have to try turning it from the flex plate like you suggested B. Last edited by Ric83; 05-17-2006 at 09:33 AM. |

Re: Well, my dad's truck finally died...
usually if it's a oil leak like that it goes out the pan as in the thrown rod and punctured the pan. Not sure on the top part of the engine if not the oil pressure switch. The only place where the engine could spew that kind of oil at the top other than the switch would be the rocker arms and if the tins were on tight and gasketed then it shouldn't be there either. Even in the oil cap came loose it wouldn't lose that much.

Re: Well, my dad's truck finally died...
well in my case I'm pretty sure the oil pump was on the way out because (almost) 25psi isn't enough to supply the entire engine properly with oil. I noticed on my way home from the dealership from picking up my crate engine the lifters were just starting to tick as I made the last turn onto my street. I sure as heck wouldn't have trusted it to make many more trips with these signs. As it turned out the engine is a 350 so I'm glad I could possibly preserve the mains etc. for future use.
