New engine problem (kinda)

I satisfied the Army (musta been the 305 in the bed of my truck) and will be on my way shortly. My engine seems to be surging or cutting out depending on how you look at it. I haven't yet really got on it obviously. But at about 5 mph it acts like you are feathering the gas. Not really noticable at hiway speeds. I checked and there is no vacumn leaks. We set the timing at 4 degrees per fact specs but I am thinking about stopping off at an autozone and advancing it a little. What do you guys think. In case I don't get the message feel free to call me on my cell (910) 728-6193. Thanks all.

Advence it to about 8-10 degrees. That will help it out some. Also did you get carb tuned in? With a new engine you need to make sure the A/F ratio is dialed in.

Re: New engine problem (kinda)

I personally would set the timing at 12 degrees and adjust the idle mixture screws to about 1 1/2 to 2 turns out. If you can get a vacuum gauge hooked up to the intake manifold, then put the idle mixture screws to the point where the vacuum is the highest and then turn them back into the carb a 1/4 turn. (this is done by taking each screw all of the way in, one at a time while the motor is running, and then back it out until the vacuum gauge reading is at it's highest reading).

The 4 degrees is not enough timing, and you want your idle to be about 700 RPM with the transmission in "DRIVE".

Oh by the way GOOD LUCK--Happy to see you on the way again. Sorry that I was out of the picture at the end......
