HEI Conversion, need opinions

I'm going to convert my stock 72 K20 350/SM465 to HEI next weekend.
I just picked up a factory GM HEI distributor on ebay out of a 76 for $14.00.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...BSAA%3AUS%3A11

Now I need an HEI rebuild/tune up kit. There are three that I am looking at... The MSD Ultimate http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...tegoryId=11579

Moroso super HEI
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...tegoryId=11579

Or Pertronix Flamethrower
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...tegoryId=11579

What's the best bang for the buck? Soon to follow are a new carb, intake, cam, and headers.

Thanks!

MSD is the way I would go. I have friends that have used them and I have never heard them say a bad thing about them.

Re: HEI Conversion, need opinions

Why not run it stock? A new module (gm part, no cheap parts store junk) and a new coil, and you'll be set. If you engine is stock, mild, or even in the medium performance range, you won't need, nor notice the extra money you'll be spending. (onless you hit the engine with spray, then you may want the upgraded stuff)

Re: HEI Conversion, need opinions

I would just replace what looks bad and try it. Remove the shaft and clean and lube everthing. Remove the old hard grease in the top bushing and carefull repack with high temp grease, its hard to get all the air out. I always replace the pickup coil while in there, ususally the insulation will be going bad or the magnet may be cracked, not alway needed, but you can replace ever other part in there without taking it apart. Add an adjusable vac advance and get a set of springs to tailor the advance. Coil and module usually work , easy to replace later if they don't. Be sure to put some new special heat conducting grease under the module so it does not burn up. Maybe a rotor win't hurt either. Short version - keep it stock and try it.

Re: HEI Conversion, need opinions

I'd toss a cuve kit, adjustable vac advance, cap and rotor in there, and drop it in.The HEI is a good unit in a fairly stock app.No reason to buy stuff you don't need.

Re: HEI Conversion, need opinions

I had a stock HEI with a Accel super coil on top and curved, but it was rebuilt and all my frieds said "junk". So peer presure set in and I bought a Pertronics Flamethrower complete distributor. Nice and New. Just drop it in and hook it up. Wont have to worry about rebuilding for a long time. They are complety new, housing and everything. And they are not that much $$$, but I dont know what kind of engine you are running or how handy you are at rebuilding dist. M2C

So was it junk... or did it in fact work fine?
Hotter coils don't really do much onless you need them... and 90% of the trucks on this board DON'T need anything hotter than a stock HEI.
