Rally or White Spokes?
Stuck between two rim options. I can get white spokes with center caps for less than $200 for the whole set at the local "discount tire". OR I can get a set of chrome rallys from The Truck Shop (with free shipping) with the plastic derby caps for around $380 bucks (their price is $88 each and the rims are shown with the caps, but I doubt they come with the rims). I think the white spokes would look great on my stock height medium blue 67, but the chrome rallys look great too...but the price is about 2 times as much. This thread is open to opinions, likes dislikes....etc....
Whatever rim I pick the tire size will be 255-70R-15 (or something real close to that) with white lettering OUT and the rims will be 6 lug 15x8's with a 4.5" backspacing (I think thats kind of the "standard" for these trucks.) Also.... do you need to run beauty rings on the chrome rallys? Do they look stupid with/without them? That will greatly add to the final cost. I was thinking since the rims are already chrome...why bother? Also, does anyone know of where I can get a better deal? A place I could pick them up? Some place similar to discount tire??? Thanks in advance

Re: Rally or White Spokes?
I say the chrome rallys, I have the silver finished ones in 6 lug on a stock height truck with tall derby caps and 3" trim rings and I really love the way the rallys with tall derbys look on these trucks. Just my .02

Re: Rally or White Spokes?
Five newer-style 8" truck ralleys, caps & all = $ 125.00 @ salvage yard.
Wire brush on electric drill. Three Wal-Mart rattle-cans. Paint thinner (degreasing). A little elbow-grease labor. Voila !!! Not as cool as chromies, but CHEAP. Click my avatar for a bigger view. |

Re: Rally or White Spokes?
How about chrome spokes ? Best bang for the buck IMHO. Jegs has 15x8 for $47 each, I would go 3-3/4 back space though. Get your caps from LMC, only 4.99 each.

Re: Rally or White Spokes?
I am actually in the same boat as you right now. I think the best thing to do is to make sure everything looks consistent.
A truck with single-color paint, no fancy trim, non-chrome grille and headlight shrouds, etc, would look better with white spoke wheels. A later model truck with two-tone paint, the fancy trim package, chrome grille, etc would look better with chrome rallys. Take a lesson from the guys who put $2k "spinners" on a dented up ford escort with fading paint: consistency is king. Last edited by cell; 06-26-2006 at 06:45 PM. |

Re: Rally or White Spokes?
Why not silver rallies with caps and rings? Go to a car show and get a wheel/tire combo for what you'll pay for the chrome rallies and shipping.

Re: Rally or White Spokes?
I have the Wheel Vintiques on mine (purchased thru Summit) and I'm really happy with the fit and look. Went with 15x8, in retrospect might have gone to 17s, going to 10's in back. I don't much care for Rallys without trim rings, and I have to admit that I don't like white spokes at all.
TugOWar, I think Wheel Vintiques has or will make virtually anything! http://www.wheelvintiques.com/ |

Re: Rally or White Spokes?
I'd look for a nice used set of alloy wheels before I bought either.

Re: Rally or White Spokes?
I like the ralleys, but you could paint a set of the spokes body color and add trim rings ande center caps. I'm debating between those two choices on my 70 also.

Re: Rally or White Spokes?
Rallyes on a 2wd.They`re chrome,you don`t need beauty rings.
Wheel Vintiques doesn`t custom make wheels. You have options when ordering. No 8-lug rallyes. White spokes are from a time when there weren`t alot of wheel choices and you only were buying wheels to fit the larger tires.Kinda the opposite of today. They started off being custom-made and were stronger than OEM with a spoke design to easily lighten them up and give venting. They became so common, everyone started wanting anything but spokes. They still look great on the right vehicle, once you open you mind.I intentionally got white spokes for my unrestored 2-tone Med.Blue/White K/20 just to make that statement. Why put $200-300 wheel on a truck just to bring out all the imperfections.I want the truck to keep it`s "as is/as was" look about it,yet upgrade the look with larger tires and wheels.A side benefit is,they`re cheap so I could buy top quality rubber. And,you`ll see, those wheels do as much for the truck as any shiney wheels would.Spoke wheels, aluminum slots, finned aluminum, and wide OEMs are all the choices for "Era Correct" wheels.Car or truck rallyes,Cragars,TorqueThrusts, are more choices for 2wd 1/2tons along that line.

Re: Rally or White Spokes?
Wow, thanks for all the imput guys! (feel free to keep it commin!)
Wheel vintiques doesn't list any pricing??? I've done the junkyard thing before, that's actually whats on the truck now. Turns out both front rims are slightly bent. I also bought a set of what looked to be nice rims for my 86 toyota from a 'yard. One of the 4 was slightly bent as well. No more used rims for me. Been there, done that I really am stuck on this. I do like the white spokes (been on the truck for 10 years) and they're cheap, but the rallys are something different but come with a price tag. I have everything I need for the truck and it's all "paid for," EXCEPT the new 700R4, BTO kits, rims, tires. The tranny and BTO kits will run about $1,100 together, the tires I'm looking at are around $350 for the set, and there's the rims still.... that's a lot of green if I want to have it on the road soon

Re: Rally or White Spokes?
It's a good thing we have more than two choices for wheels. Maybe not on this poll, but otherwise.
I have Wheel Vintique vette-style rallyes on my truck, but they're powder-coated in red, with police-style caps and small (narrow) trim rings. I like 'em, but that is what I wanted. Gave up my old school aluminum wheels for the change. Still got 'em, just don't yet know what I'm gonna do with 'em. No more trucks needing them, and ain't gonna get another one, either. Yard sale? Oh, you can get FREE SHIPPING from Summit, for the wheels. I was skeptical, but it's true. Instead of weighing the entire shipment, each wheel goes as an item. I checked with another company (mfr) in CA, and the shipping on four wheels would have run me over $80. Go on-line to www.summitracing.com and do your pricing. Don't go to the mfr website.

Re: Rally or White Spokes?
OK.... 28 to 4.... not as close as I thought it would be
If I do go with the rallys, what's everyone with rally's running? 15x8 with ?? backspacing? Or 15x10? Summit only lists have the "wheel vintique" crome rallys 15x8 with a 4" BS. The other options are a 15x10 with a 4.5 or 5" BS. 15x10 seems too wide, I don't want the rims sticking out of the fenders, or rubbing the bedside on the inside.

If I had it to do again, I would have probably gone with 17x8 in front and 17x10 in the rear. Note that I didn't mock up the clearance for these, so I can't say how they'd work. I bought the 15s because I wanted a visual match with my '69 Vette and wanted to use the same trim rings and centers. Found out the stock trim rings do not work with these wheels, but WV has the right ones. The center caps went right on. |
