9 inch rearend install

has anybody put a 9 inch in there truck?. one whith rear coils. does anybody make the i beam perches to weld to a diferant axel?

I have done this with my 67swb. I used a 9inch from a 1975 lincoln (with rear disc).

You pretty much cut all the old brackets off, and then weld on the new perch brackets (can get these from www.earlyclassic.com). If you are using the rear end with disc, there is one bracket that you should leave on so that you can easily use two driver side ebrake cables to make the ebrake work with your existing cables....
This change will also give you 5 on 5 lug pattern...

These rears are offset to the right on trucks so you will have to cut the crossmember the drive shaft goes through to clear.
Car rears mostly have 5 on 4.5 I thought but trucks rears do have 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern which sometimes limits wheel options.
Just put one in my GMC with a ladder bar set up and I redrilled the axles and drums to 5 on 5 for chevy wheels.

I had a 9 inch built for my 72 by strange engineering......not that far out of being reasonable. I also put the art morrison Tri-4 bar suspension with it and Strange billet coil over adjustable shocks. Almost forgot the Big Baer brakes.....looks sweet. Stock bolt pattern is 5 on 5....... I switched to 5 on 4 3/4 for better wheel selection.....also went with 1/2" studs.

I did not have to cut my crossmember and have not had any problems with my 1-piece driveshaft.....

Also, if you use the disc brake rear from the lincoln (1970-1978 lincoln continental with 460 v8), it will be lug pattern 5 on 5, which matches the 71 and up chevy/gmc front disc brake setup...

Yeah, the punkin is offcenter on the 88 and up to accomadate the gastank inside the bed rail, but not the 60on up. A big ford car is 5on5 just like big chev cars (I think, chevs I am possitive, fords just thinking outloud!).

Currie built mine, Strange center section, ECE bags and trailing arm stiffeners. Will a stock GM one lunger handle 1000 horses?

seriously though, strength wise, I'd personally put in a 14 bolt. wayyyyyy stronger if you plan on having a high horsepower engine in the truck.

thanks guys for all the help.. as for why.. well hotroders have figured out a long time ago that the nines were way strong.. plus you can build them way stronger and lighter for the money.. im not crazy just cheap!

One cool feature of some of the Lincoln 9" rears is that they have pinion flanges instead of yokes (for dual-CV driveshafts). Makes conversions really easy. I have pulled one from an old Continental (or was it a TownCar?).

hey guys i bought the 9 inch narrowing litature off ebay. it is pretty descriptive and seem like it will be easy to do. i will let you guys no how it goes when i get done. maybe take some pictures....

Overall the lincoln nine is about 1 inch wider then the 67-70 chevy rear and is the same size (or about) as the chevy 71-72 rears.

Also, if you have a 67-70, and you convert to front disc, that widens the front end by an inch....

alright i just had an epiphany. my local junk yard has a dozen of thes things laying around.. i measured a couple of them the larger bearing ones. they have offset pinion centers and mesure 57 inches from wheel flange to flange. the off set is 2 inches so if i would shorten the long end and use a short axel out of another rear end i would have a 55 inch rearend which is an inch narrower and will be centered. sound good

Will probably work but for all the trouble I would probably find a lincoln or mustang rear just watchout for the versailles rear (disc brake version 1977-1980 I think) I hear the gear ratio selection is poor but if a high gear ratio is ok it might even work. I put a 9 out of a 1966 truck in mine and except for the offset it fit fine. later on I plan on doing a full backhalf so the offset wont matter then. I aint no pro by no means but theres my 2 cents
