Tips on rust in the roof
Got a friend with a 70 Stepside. Only rust on the truck is the upper cab corners where the pillar meets the top. Both inside and outside. I know some of you have had to deal with this. Can you provide some direction?
Thanks, Larry |

I'd like to know too. Once, I thought about cutting out the inside of the cab ceiling to gain access, then install some sound deadener against the outside layer of the cab and hide everything with an original headliner. I chickened out, though.

Inner roof rust is one of the more difficult areas to deal with, Depending on how far it's gone---. I believe both GMC Paul and WES sell a inner roof section that replaces the piece between the windshield and the start of the headliner. BUT the problem is that you may have to remove the windshield and know what you are doing in the "welding-bodywork area" etc. --depending. Minor rust can be addressed with spraying POR 15 into the windshield frame via rust holes or sunvisor mounting hole, etc. Just be sure to remove or retap any bolt/screw holes after getting POR15 on them as that stuff is tough. Cover with Bondo or whatever.
IF the damage is extensive (beyond inner roof) it's almost cheeper in the long run to have the cab roof replaced or replace the cab as the cost to repair can far exceed the cost of replacement. Outer roof/windshield frame repair is similar to any other rust problem---cut out, POR15, seal, cover and paint. |
