5-speed manual options ... ???
Does anyone know what 5-speed manuals (stock or otherwise) bolt up to our older V8's? I'm really interested in finding something that would allow me to cruise @ 2000-2200 rpm while on the highway.
If anyone has experience or info to share, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave |

Re: 5-speed manual options ... ???
A V8 is a V* SBC or BBC and the years pretty much too. I'd say a great way for major power is a TKO 500 or 600, if stock you could get away with a 5 or 6 out of a camaro of the mid to late 90's or if heavy duty truckin' NV4500. the TKO's are in the $2-3K complete ready to bolt in and the used 5's out of Camaro's can be had for $1k or so, NV4500 about $1500-2000 just for the tranny.

Re: 5-speed manual options ... ???
Great info!!!
I'm looking for something that could utilize the same ... or relatively the same ... stick position and orientation. Truck will not necessarily be used for racing or need "quick throws" ... mainly a "daily driver"/"work truck" scenario ... but could have fun with when necessary. What about the stock manual trannys out of newer model Chevy trucks, once again due to the needed stick position and orientation? Thanks again, Dave |

Re: 5-speed manual options ... ???
You do not want a 5 speed from a 80's Camaro. The Camaro / Mustang's used the T5. It is a good reliable transmission.. behind a 4 banger or maybe a 6. The best T5's were only rated to 300ft lb & still wouldn't last too long at that.
I'd have to agree about the NV4500 being a good solid choice. The NV3500 would probably be cheaper & work too, but not take as much abuse.

One thing to watch for is if the front bearing retainer fits firmly into the bell houseing so your lined up straight. The muncie retainer is smaller than the B houseing and a ring needs to be made to make up the differance

Re: 5-speed manual options ... ???
So the NV3500's are a strong transmission. How well would it hold up behind a stock 350 with flat tops and a mild cam? If I could pick one up for a couple hundred bucks is that a good deal?

Re: 5-speed manual options ... ???
The NV 3500 came in manual truck in the 88-98 series trucks. I have a 92 with this tranny and it has been a good one (268,000 miles and counting).
For street trucks with only slightly modified engines they are fine, unless you plan on driving one quarter of a mile at a time. I am using one in my 70 c 10. Some 4.3 liter v 6 s 10 trucks have this same transmission. I am using my original driveshaft with this tranny and the engine in the forward position. The greatest challenge is the hydraulic clutch setup, due to the tranny having an integral bellhousing. Do a search and you should find several thread about this topic.

Re: 5-speed manual options ... ???
the T-5 was NEVER installed in front of anything bigger than a 305. Not from the factory. Ford 302 and Chevy's dog of a 305 kills T-5 trannys.
MAYBE a 327 wouldn't kill it... but, the part where he says "Use it like a truck" probably would. You may get 50 - 75,000 miles, but that's it, and only if it is a solid new or newish tranny to begin with. A 283, or any inline, would be great to bolt up to a T-5. |

Re: 5-speed manual options ... ???
Chevybill, what transmission X-member are you using in your C-10? When it comes to the integral bellhousing, you just had to install a clutch master cylinder? If so, what and how did you do it? Pics would be great, if you have or can take any ...
Thanks, Dave |

Re: 5-speed manual options ... ???
This transmission can use an aftermarket x-member and auto tranny mount on the crossmember. I do not have my pedal setup figured out just yet. I have no pics. I will be mounting a master cylinder on the firewall. The main part is getting the pedal movement correct without "bottoming out" the master cylinder. The easiest way to do this is to purchase an entire truck with this tranny, pedal, etc all still intact. I did not have that advantage and am piecing things together as money permits.

Re: 5-speed manual options ... ???
Ive heard over on chevelles.com that they are working on a 5 speed muncie. Youd have to buy the entire trans or gearset and swap it into your trans. However not sure if the truck muncie and car munie have the same cases...etc

I'm trying to get down to 2000-2200 rpm too. I use a 4 speed muncie and now I'm playing with the rear gears. 3:73 are still too high. I just bought some 3:07's so I'm let you know it it works.

Re: 5-speed manual options ... ???
Are you sure you want to get down to the 2000-2200 range? Someone was on here just the other day getting poor mileage b/c he was lugging his engine on the interstate at these speeds.
Just a thought. Quote:

Re: 5-speed manual options ... ???
Will the trans out of a 4x4 work in a 2wd? In theory shouldn't you get better gas mileage while slightly lugging your engine? You would be dumping in the same amount of fuel but the engine would be turning slower giveing the fuel more time to burn. Just a thought, correct me if I am wrong.
