Wheelwell gravel shields
I am putting together a 71 fleetside short bed, does anyone install the (2)gravel shields that go on the rear of the tubs? I'm sure it helps with stone chips dings etc. How about the (2) braces that go from the cross sill to the bedside to at the bottom to reduce flexing? Anyone have pictures of how these are mounted? Any help will be apprecitated. Thanks

Re: Wheelwell gravel shields
You defenantly need the braces, my old SWB had them missing and the lower portions of the bedsides flapped and vibrated enough to rip. (this was solid sheetmetal with no rust or filler)

Re: Wheelwell gravel shields
Thanks Longhorn Man, I was trying to mount the braces and ran into a problem. I have them going from the second cross sill from the front of the bed (on the front bed panel side of the sill) to the bed side at the bottom. On side goes on with a little bit of a push on the beside outwards. The otherside misses by at least 1/2 to 3/4 inch, should I just drill a new hole. I checked the bed for squareness etc. Thanks for any available advice. I am also needing advice on how the gravel sheilds mount, do they go in behind the wheel well lip or in front?

Re: Wheelwell gravel shields
I have already painted the gravel shields and I wanted to know how they mount. Looks like I have an alignment problem with the hole at the bottom of the bedside, the one on the top inside the tub is OK. I sure don't want to scratch up new paint but I don't want to leave them off either. They do lap over the bedside instead of going to the inside of the wheel opening lip right? Thanks

Re: Wheelwell gravel shields
Before you drill, the guards go behind the wheel not in front of it.
I think it's the third cross-sill from the rear (if you count the rear sill). Dano

Re: Wheelwell gravel shields
Thanks Dano69c10, I knew that they go behind the rear wheel, but do they lap over the bedside lip or under it? Thanks again.
