Which AC compressor for 134 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm in the process of getting my factory air working. I've got everything hooked up except the compressor, which is missing. I'm converting to 134 refrigerant and am wandering if I should use a stock compressor for that era truck. Or can I use a more modern compressor. Is one compressor better than the other? If I do go with a newer one, can the belt/pulley system be converted to the standard V-belt? What makes one compressor better than another one? Any suggestions or recommendations for using the 134 in the system would be appreciated. Thanks, matt

from research ive done the 60 to 66 compressors are junk but the 67 72 compressors are a much better part and you can use them with 134 and not have any problems. i just picked up the ac compressor and the brackets and some electrical stuff that went with it and a flawless core support for 50 bucks

It totally depends on what look you want. Its really pretty simple, if you want the stock original look go with the stock A6, it will work fine. If you have a custom and don't care if it looks original, use a later model more efficient compressor, a lot of people do that and they look and work great. I have a stock setup in my 71 that uses the old A6 but has been coverted to 134 and I am very plesed with how it works and looks but if I were building a custom truck that wasn't going to be original I would probably add a vintage air kit that is more efficient.

Thanks Tom and Jeff. Just wanted to make sure the 67-72 compressor was worth messing with. Tom, I just found all the inside AC stuff I needed at AB Truck Salvage on Commercial Ave. 50.00---They have a few of our trucks and I think I saw a suburban (Late 70's)-- Good resource here in San Diego.
