Is there a difference in 3-speed trans linkage, I6 -vs- V8?

A fellow board member is installing the 3-speed trans, linkage, steering column... everything that came out of my 68, into his truck. My 68 was originally an I6. His truck is an original V8.

Is the 3-speed shift linkage rods on the I6 longer than the V8, since the V8 sits further forward, thus moving the trans farther up, making the length of the linkage rods shorter? Or am I on crack???

Yep, the linkages for a I6 are longer than the V8(2wd), since the bellhousing and tranny sit farther to the rear.

That's kinda what I thought, just needed someone to confirm it. Thanks!!!!!

Chris, here's our answer!! Now if we only knew how much longer and where, we might be able to lengthen them........

Aren't you a helluva friend!?!?!!!!

Green Machine - Thanks for the offer. We currently have the I6 linkages, and are trying to install the tranny in a stock V8 setup. I think we either need to get linkages from a V8 truck, modify these, or move the whole enchalada.

man unless you are going for an orginal look i would put the motor trany combo in the 6's placement. it fits good and drives better i think. you will definatly see better hook in high hp situation.. oh ya i forgot the linkage will fit to..

Re: Is there a difference in 3-speed trans linkage, I6 -vs- V8?

I used the same I6 linkage with a V8 swap. The motor is close to the fire wall but it works. This gives you a better weight transition if you're tryingn to hook up at the track. Other than that it is a pain in the butt cause I can't run tall valve covers

Re: Is there a difference in 3-speed trans linkage, I6 -vs- V8?

I have a pair of I6 linkages here, I can dig em out and try to measure them if that will help, our camera is broken else I could get pics, or I could sell them or swap for some other parts ?

Hey don't jinx it! It's very sensitive. Does anybody know if the z-bar is the same? I don't know why it wouldn't be, but we were wrong on the linkages so it wouldn't surprise me.
