Part Suggestions

I have some ideas for the suppliers out there. I would like to here coments or suggestions on these ideas.

1. Why do they not chrome the 71-72 chevy aluminum grills? I have heard the steel ones dont fit and I hate the look of anodized aluminum.

2. Mold the cargo light lens in red plastic for an easy third brake light.

To me I am surprised that they dont already do this. It would be cheap and easy and I think popular. So what do you think?

Re: Part Suggestions

somebody already offers a chrome 71-72grill but it has a pooor fit// third brake light out of the cargo lamp is as easy as putting a red bulb in the socket and running new wires

Re: Part Suggestions

Like I said above I know they make a chrome grill in steel but like you say have heard it doesent fit. That is why I suggested they chrome the aluminum grills which fit and dont rust. I ahve seen the cargo light made into the third brake light with a red bulb and didnt care to much for it. That is why I suggested molding the lens in red plastic, to me it would look much better.

I agree. Plus the fact that a red bulb for a cargo light is not available in the Netherlands.
Come to think of it, not even a white bulb is available...
When I bought the cargo light years ago I bought also a few bulbs as spare.
But with the bed cover on there is not much use for it as a cargo light so I would like to turn it into a third brake light.

Re: Part Suggestions

We have had little problems putting on the chrome grilles. DO they fit perfect. No. Can they fit yes. I've seen trucks that look great. I've asked the owners and recieved good comments from them. Like, "It was more work than I thought but overall I am pleased with it" They are not as bad as everyone makes them out to be. I know I just opened myself to all kinds of bad fit replys. But we can put them on and make them look decent.. They may hang over the fender a little more than stock.

The third brake light thing would just be a color change. How much demand is their?

Re: Part Suggestions

be careful with the addition of a third brake light, up until recently here in virginia it was illegal to add any extra brake lights not originally on the vehicle. it was a rediculous law, but i had to fail many new and old vehicles when it came time for inspection. may be wise to check local laws before continuing.

Heres my part suggestion...

Manufacture a under cab bucket seat mount kit for 67-72 Chevrolet trucks.

Re: Part Suggestions

I don't think they can chrome plate metals that are nonmagnetic. You might be able to have an aluminum grill Electro Polished , i'm pretty sure they can do that and it looks pretty good.

Re: Part Suggestions

I figured this would be a good thread and was right. I think this thread will give a good place for suggestions for parts that are unavaliable or be cool customs. I already see some vendors are taking an intrest.

As for not being able to chrome aluminum I thought I have seen and heard on the tv shows that they chrome some of the aluminum wheels on there projects. So I figured if they can chrome aluminum wheels why not aluminum trim and grills.

Keep up the great info. Thanks.

Re: Part Suggestions

Well, here is the "don't fit reply"...Those chrome grills don't fit!!! We got so many returns---from good body shops---that we quit selling them.
They are way too flat. The shape does not match the hood!
I can make them fit, sort of, by cutting, reshaping the hood latch assemblies, and lots of welding & grinding...and then the hood has too be too far back with big gaps on the ends. NOS fits good, repro alum fits OK with a little work, and chrome just doesn't fit.
Take a look at the pics. We tried them on two different trucks, when the body shop returned them...
AND THE DAM*** major distributor on the East Coast/NJ for these will not make them good. We are stuck with them!!!

How do they chrome plate plastic? Like the A/C balls, or is that something totally different altogether?

I asked my boss today he's been dealing with platers for at least 30 years and here's what I got
Aluminum can be electropolished
Aluminum can be chrome plated if they copper coat it first
there is a place in houston that does this kind of stuff called Airline Plating
i'll edit this later with a phone number after I check with them for more details and maybe prices

Re: Part Suggestions

There is a company tha makes a LED insert to fit the cargo light. It has the White LED lights on the left and right, and red LED in the middle for a third brakelight. I will look later today and find the link for it.

Re: Part Suggestions

As for chrome plating aluminum, it can be done. However, it is not recommended for thin aluminum sheet. The problem is the sheet dents easily, allowing the plating to crack.

I would like to see someone make custom center consoles, with and w/o shifters, but then if you don't want to look like everyone else, you make your own.

Re: Part Suggestions

Custom fit mud flaps for 67-72, something that is molded to the body lines and will fit properly, nothing real big or huge, just something that looks nice and help keep the road slop and rock chips down, maybe make out a a material that can be painted to match body color. I need 3 sets right now !!!

I know this is of the subject, but I like the factory bucket seats! Who doesn't. Is this a product that can be done by a upolstry shop. Or does someone reproduce these (probably not). What do you think? oldno7

Since this thread is up, I'll do a baby hijacking. On the grille topic. LMC offer's a $300 aluminum and a $600 OE aluminum. Are there any fit issue's with the cheaper of the two?

I'd like to see aftermarket parts that FIT. I'd be willing to pay more for something that was a direct bolt on instead of spending hours modifying a $300 part.
