250 ignition conversion

Hello all, this is my 1st post here. Looks like a great site!

I just got a 1967 C10 with the 250 i-6. I would like to convert it to an electronic ignition but can not seam to find a drop in replacement. Are they avaliable? I want to keep the stock look of the dist. cap , I just want to loose the points and cond.

Thanks!

Re: 250 ignition conversion

If you want to keep the stock cap and coil you will have to go with a pertronix kit. Otherwise you could get a HEI distibuter from a newer 250 and swap it in. Thats the route I went. There is a FAQ on here about doing that too.

Re: 250 ignition conversion

Welcome to the board! I used a Pertronix p/n 1162A for my '70. It took about a half hour to install (I'm slow), and it works great. I noticed a slight
improvement in mpg, but the best thing is, no points to mess with!

I used the petronix system as well and noticed the same things. It's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Re: 250 ignition conversion

Hiya Tom, welcome to the forums.

There is an "FAQ/Write-ups" forum here:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/f...splay.php?f=28

It has a lot of commonly done projects for our trucks and tons of other crap. The easiest way to sort through the pile of things to do is to check the "index" thread which lists all of the projects here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=157669

I did a huge writeup with pictures in there explaining how to swap over to HEI (electronic ignition/no points) here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=148346

Just search that page for a topic you'd be interested in - like, in your case, look for the word "inline" or "HEI" to look for the ignition threads or inline stuff.

It should give you all the pictures and info you'd need to do this upgrade. I've had several people write me in private saying it was the easiest upgrade they've ever done with the best results out of any upgrade for a fail-free start every time. The easy part was installing it using the directions in that thread - the hard part was finding the parts I have part numbers listed as well, so you should find it to be pretty easy.

Re: 250 ignition conversion

Thanks for the replies! The HEI looks pretty easy, but I want to keep the stock look.

I have seen a few people post that the Pertronix is unreliable. Is this true?

Again, thanks for the help!

Re: 250 ignition conversion

I've heard nothing but great things about pertronix.

You'll still need to use that thread above for running new wires and a few other things, so don't toss it just yet The only big difference is the new unit may come with two pieces (external coil) instead of one big bulky unit.

Re: 250 ignition conversion

I heard about problems with the reliability of pertronix in some of the earlier units, but have heard nothing but good in the last 5 years or so.
