heater valve
I've been trying to get my A/C blowing ice cold. One of the things that occurred to me is that my heater hoses are getting really hot. It appears to me that my heater valve isn't closing (getting vaccum). Shouldn't this valve close when I turn the temp lever on the controls to "cold", or should the valve close when I turn the a/c lever to "inside"?

Re: heater valve
Yes.
The feed hose will stay warm but the return going from the heater core back to the rad or water pump should be cooler if the shut-off valve is working.

Re: heater valve
Also make sure the heater hoses aren't hooked up backwards. The 5/8 line from the intake goes into the heater valve and then into the lower heater core nipple and it returns from the upper heater core line through the 3/4 hose into either the water pump or radiator. If its backwards, hot water will sit in the heater core and although it won't flow, heat rises and you will have hot water in the heater core all the time.

Re: heater valve
I've got the hoses on correctly.
For the meantime, I think I'm going to wire tie my valve closed, and see if that helps. And the "closed" position occurs when the valve is getting vaccum correct?

Re: heater valve
I believe so,yes.
To make sure though disconnect the vacume line at the shut off valve with the controlls set on A/C and see if there is vacume.

Re: heater valve
That's my problem, I'm not getting vaccum at the hose right now. Something's not connected correctly in my dash, and until I can get that fixed I need to rig the valve shut. Thanks.
