well i spent most of the day changing my gear oil in my diff and cleaning the caked on dirt off the houseing and went through a few cans of brake clean spraying out the inside of the houseing but i did find out some info that some of you might find usfull stock gear for a 71 custom/10 with a 350sb/th350 combo is a 3.07 and i counted the gears but came to find out that if you look on the outer edge of the ring gear there are numbers eched in and the gear tooth amount is there and for example mine is 14:43 you can still count if you want but if not then the numbers are on the side just thought everybody might like to know that didnt already oh and by the way if you havent changed the oil since youve had you might want to cause mine was blacker than black ..haha..

oh it did and i thought clean gear oil smelt bad but that was worse id rather smeel a burnt trans haha but it was worth it tomorrow i start rebuilding the carb then change the oil in the engine then clean the plugs

Your oil was probably only at 50% of it's lubricating properties too. This is why I pretty much always tell ppl to drain the diff when they come here asking what kinda gears they have.

it came out flowing like water so im deffinitly glad i changed it alot of people dont relize that gear oil doesnt last forever and i agree with you longhorn i deal with people everyday that dont understand changing oil on time and fluids plus im kinda anal about cars atlest about my truck i am so i hope other guys reading this decide to do there diffs to haha

what do you guys recomond for diff lube? 85-140 or is there any benifit to going synthetic

I used 80-90w in mine. I didn't go synthetic or add any additives because I don't have a posi so I don't know of any benefits.

Synthetic is more stable and with gear lube changes going into the 15 year plan they last longer than conventional. 80-90 is good enough, the 85-140 is like syrup in the cooler months, so unless you want to change it every season stick with the 80-90. Royal Purple has made a believer out of me and my tranny guys swears by it.

on the oil, synthetic is WAY better, one leg, posi, locker... it doesn't matter. If you have the $$, go for the synthetic.
