15000 mile 1971??

A friend just bought this 1971 from the widow of the original owner. It came with all of the paperwork from the original purchase. The odometer reads 15,000 miles. I thought at first it has to be 115, but look at the hose clamps, the tie around the heater hoses, etc. Do you guys think it could be....

Re: 15000 mile 1971??

I think that looks like 115K look at all the build up on the block, plus why would you need a zip tie in the heater/fuel line with those low miles? if it really had 15k then you would be able to see that orange block clearly, and look at all the mold on the heater box.

Edit: I would expect to see the chalk markings in the firewall in a 15K mile truck, but that's just my opinion.

Good point about the grease. It has been sitting for quite a few years, that explains the mold. But you still don't see the OE clamps on the hoses much around here.

I agree, does the truck have any documentation? but hey if the truck is nice and he likes it and if he got it real cheap who cares if really has 15k? specially here in the rustbelt? any side shots? it looks in pretty good shape

Re: 15000 mile 1971??

my 71 chevelle had an original zip-tie, and a tie like the one holding the heater hose, fuel line and vaccuum line together. GM must have been trying a few things to keep all the new smog lines from rubbing.

Re: 15000 mile 1971??

Mold and mildew on a 15000 mile truck, sure. A completely greased over engine from top to bottom, not a chance. It's still an unmolested truck in decent shape though and I'd love to clean it up and keep it on the road.

My 72 still has all the chalk marks on the firewall, but it has 116000 on it.

Re: 15000 mile 1971??

Nice truck! I'd buy it. I have to agree with the others, for the engine to have THAT much oil build up on it the motor would have had to have a serious leak from the factory from the day it was new. My 67's engine bay wasn't that dirty and it had 77K on it when I got it in '96. I think it has 95K on it now?

Re: 15000 mile 1971??

My '72 C10 had the original style hose clamps on it (a few left anyway) when I bought it. It was on its 2nd motor and probably had around 200k miles. I have no clue why they were still there, they are such a crappy design, and new hose clamps are so cheap...

Re: 15000 mile 1971??

I agree with you all. Honestly, I was so overwhelmed at the OE stuff, that I didn,t even pay much attention to the oil/dirt on the engine. I will be going to see it in person this evening and will get some pictures of the sides, and inside the bed. Maybe I will see what he intends to do with it.....

What really does impress me is that it still has all of the body panels left on it and they aren't consumed with rust, IN MARYLAND ! Even the under hood looks good when considering that this truck lived in a salty environment. JMHO, Dean
