ARIZONA members- Phoenix area emissions testing- How hard is it to pass?
Howdy;
The wife and I are interested in moving to the Phoenix area, and have learded they do emissions testing on cars and trucks dating back to 1967 manufacture. Know from the state website that it entails both a visual verification that required emission control equipment for that model is present, and an exhaust "sniffner" test to determine if vehicle requires "repair". Does any member here have FIRST HAND experience with the Arizona emissions testing? Would especially like to here from those with trucks that have had bigger engines swapped in, and those with engines modified from stock specs. Thanks for any relevent info. cowboy33713 Last edited by cowboy33713; 09-03-2006 at 09:20 PM. |

Re: ARIZONA members- Phoenix area emissions testing- How hard is it to pass?
i have to do this with my BB 71 that i have. motor supposedly has a cam etc. done to it (ok idle,intake,headers,carb etc.) its a scary process for me since i can only tune it so well (set carb,idle,new plugs,timeing before going in) but ive passed so far and will be putting a little set of cats on this year to hopefully help me pass for atleast one more year.
as far as visual, they didnt really have any emissions crap on our trucks so they dont really bother except putting the sniffer in the tailpipes. |

I haven't had any problem with my 72 truck (350 automatic) and my 69 vette (427 3x2 4sp). I just do a tune up before I go. They do check the gas cap to make sure that it seals other than that its not to bad.

Howdy:
Thanks, fellas. Did got to the DMV website first, but didn't get but the usual generalities, and a statement of fees required, as well as a couple of grid maps of the emissions test areas. I feel a bit better about the whole thing now; may have to rethink my build up of a stroker 351W for my 68 mustang though. The truck should be fine with it's mild 350. You fellas in AZ- do you find the high temperatures to be a problem for you or for your vehicles? Will be flying out from Florida next month as sort of an advance scouting of the area, hope to find an area we really like. How does Scottsdale look? cowboy33713 |

I drive my truck all the time in the summer with no problems, but my big block Vette is another thing, it runs 220 to 225.
I have lived in Scottsdale for 20 years and it is a great place. |

Re: ARIZONA members- Phoenix area emissions testing- How hard is it to pass?
if ya have money ya live in scottsdale
as for the heat, everyone likes to laugh when ya say its a "dry heat" but being from RIANSYLVANIA (pennsylvania) i know all about humidity/heat. ill take the 115* dry heat anyday. its been pretty humid off and on here lately sicne we are in the monsoon season but still not bad. my truck runs up to 200* or so at a light but other than that no problems. (4core rad makes a big difference along with having watter wetter and straight water in the rad) |

Re: ARIZONA members- Phoenix area emissions testing- How hard is it to pass?
Howdy again;
Roger that on the humidity. Her in west central Fla., anything less than 80% in considered dry...for here. The upshot there is that when temps are above 88degrees or so, sweat WILL NOT evaporate off of skin, and it's like you are breathinmg through a hot wet towel. Summer is awful. We had emission testing for a short time here before Gov. Jeb Bush decided that the $$$ could be better spent on the highway upkeep, as the air wasn't that bad to start with ( not from cars and trucks, anyway!), but was wondering how different the program might be in AZ. Didn't have a modified car/truck back then! cowboy33713 |
