What did you get done- Labor Day edition

So far my Labor Day weekend hasn't been very productive. My wife's Denali had a flat tire Friday morning so I had to play Taxi driver when I got home Friday evening. I aired it up Saturday morning and took it to be fixed. After that I did pool maintenance, and a bit of yard work.

Today I had service calls, then went to see my sister-in-laws new baby.

What did you get done?

Re: What did you get done- Labor Day edition

Let's see . . . .... Friday I worked lated to avoid any work related activities over the long weekend.

Saturday I spent some time around the house (which I haven't done lately). I got some garage time in & worked a little more on my Beaters radiator support & swap meet special radiator I picked up a few weeks ago. I went to TX Motorplex Sat night to watch them film an episode of 'Pinks'. It was a slightly different format than what I've seen on the show but it was free (so I won't complain).

Today I got back out to the garage & after a few trips to the hardware store I was able to finish up my electric fan/radiator install. Now I just need to make a clean transition piece to hide some ugly (IMO) stuff & it will look even better & then get the fan controls (relays, wiring, & thermo) to make it functional.

I also did some much needed tool & garage clean-up so hopefully I can get more done tomorrow.

Re: What did you get done- Labor Day edition

I actually accomplished alot, but it all started on Monday of last week... the Thursday before last weekend my father called and said that my step mom was going to be here this weekend and that I needed to have the engine from the 82 out so she could take it back.. well last weekend I went camping so I didnt get anything done for the next week I would work on it every night after work for 2-3hrs. The first 2 nights were uneventful as I fought with a bumper bolt. The 3rd night I was determined to get more accomplished and ended up getting the core support and most of the front engine parts that werent needed off. Thurs night I worked on stripping the engine down more (carb, exhaust off the heads, all wires and hoses etc..). Friday while trying to beat an in coming storm I removed the headers for better working area and the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Sat with some help from my father in law We had the engine pulled and ready for the 12hr trip home in about 4 hrs... the rest of the weekend I relaxed and today I may go pull the radio from the 82 and install it in the 87 as the radio doesnt work only the CD player.. and I have memorized every song on the 3 CDs I own.. So on with the pics.... by the way, the last pic is what caused the truck to be retired.. that is the frame where the engine/suspension crossmember mounts.

Re: What did you get done- Labor Day edition

I got most of my frame cleaned up, but now I need to go buy another wire wheel for my angle grinder and then my primer and such. Changed oil and repacked the wheelbearings in my Buick, because all the hardware stores are closed on Sundays and on Monday because of Labor day.

LMAO!!!

I worked all weekend and enjoyed the rain.

Jon that was a bad break in the frame. Are you using the 82 to finish the 87 up? I know you put alot of work into the 82. What is your stepmpm doing with the 350 you pulled out?

Re: What did you get done- Labor Day edition

I am using alot from the 82 on the 87.. the core support, hood, fender, bench seat, the entire front suspension... an anything else I can find. As far as the engine, she is taking back to CO so my dad can put it in his 65 K10. Also here is what that trailer is normally used for. My dad uses the 65 K10 and the trailer to haul water to thier house. When it is loaded full, the truck is pulling about 2.5tons of weight. Right now the truck has a small block (283-302 or there abouts) with an SM420 (7.0:1 first gear), Rockwell 221 tcase and 3.73s with rear posi. Even with a full load he still has to start off in 2nd gear..

If it is pics you are after, I'll snap some tomorrow after work.

Until then, here are the specifics. 1990 Chevrolet Scottsdale Suburban 1500 2WD, 350/700r4, two-tone blue exterior, blue interior, 86,xxx miles. It has three row bench seat seating, vinyl floor covering, A/C (still blows cold), tilt, CC, AM/FM casette, roof rack, rear barn doors, receiver hitch, Rally wheels, work truck front end (dual HL, not quad). It also has a freshly rebuilt transmission and new shocks/brakes all around. The interior is immaculate, the exterior has some slight rust and the GM peeling paint problem of that era. The engine has a blown head gasket and a slight oil consumption problem prior to that. I paid $700 for the Burb, and hope to investigate the engine issues...hopefully it only needs new head gaskets and valve seals...will find out more once I dig into it further. My wife and I are excited about getting this, we both think it will be a great family vehicle with plenty of room to do lots of things and go lots of places.

They worked for me last night, I just put the link so you can go look at them. Tired of fighting with it.. as far as the flexing, yeah I think it had ALOT to do with it. The 87 is a GMC longbed, 305 tbi, 700r4, with 3.08s I believe..

Re: What did you get done- Labor Day edition

I went out to my mom's house to work for the long weekend. The work included cleaning out her late husbands mess in the 3 car garage. He was a heavy machinery mechanic. So there was a ton of things that no one knows what the heck it is, or how to use it. His son's came and stripped the garage of all the shop tools, welding, and compressor. Damn, I was hoping that wouldn't happen, oh well , it can all be replaced. At least it wasn't 110 degrees out this weekend! I found a few things that I will be able to use on my truck that is the good thing. Like a posi carrier and gears! I just need to look up the numbers and see if it will fit! Now to the great news, I may be able to help some burb owners out there. He had died when he crashed his 1990 Suburban. I found some suburban things in the attic that I need to get rid of for FREE! This is not an ad! I will throw away most, but there were a few things to go to someone that may need it. I found a 3rd row seat in grey, the chrome fender lips(brand new in plastic), some door parts etc... Nothing real big. but might be what someone needs. If anyone wants or needs this stuff let me know! PM me. I'll try to get some pictures posted this week.

Re: What did you get done- Labor Day edition

Saturday I built a mantle for the fireplace and installed a side entry door to my wifes garage (these were on the honeydew list), then I got a few more sheets of plywood up on my garage walls, took the wife out for mexican and watched a movie.

Sunday I hit Lowe's at 8:00 am and left at noon with a full truck and 500$ less in my pocket, then commenced to assist my buddy in carrying 50 (yes, 50) 12ft. sheets of sheetrock into his basement, which SUCKED! We had dinner there and then I came home and hung up one of my new shop lights before bed.

Today I picked up the mattress set my wife bought, picked up all the materials for a drop down ceiling in the garage, mowed the lawn and cleaned up some clutter so I had some room to work on my walls.

Therefore, nothing truck related, but I'll be updating some as I have to get it ready to go to the body shop on the 11th.

Re: What did you get done- Labor Day edition

I got nothing done on my truck over the weekend, which I spent camping / hunting & quadding up North by the lake. Had a bit of an accident while quadding, and dislocated my knee (Again! Doh!), so I didn't get much done today when I got home, lol

Earlier this week I got a bit done though -- Finished mounting my burb tank, replaced my e-brake cables, and painted up the rest of the frame / diff etc from the cab back. Only thing left to do behind the cab is put shocks on, paint the underside of the box, and get the box's bodywork done.

Cab forwards is basically done too -- Need to tighten a few nuts and bolts, set my timing, and figure out an air filter for the TBI.

Inside is where most of the work is -- I need to build a new cluster for the truck, and get my interior back togther.

The truck will be dropped off at the bodyshop this winter at the earliest, and once they are finished their work, I'll start using it as a summer driver to the lake, to church etc.

Just bought myself a Pathfinder as an economical DD for driving to University and back, so I won't be doing much fiddling for the next while.

During the week I started on removing (extracting now) the bolt to the body bushing on the Jimmy.
I have also been working on the 6.0L Vortec wiring harness now that I have the GM manuals for it. No more trips to the dealership!

I also installed a new door on my house. WHAT A PAIN!

Re: What did you get done- Labor Day edition

Friday night I drove out to Vegas with my girlfriend so that we could pick up a motor from a buddy of mine. 24 hours later we were back in town with a LT1 from a '94 Camaro with $50k on the odometer, a 600 CFM Holley and carb adjustment kit, all for... $70.

$50 for the motor, $20 for the carb and kit.

Then the rest of the weekend I've been working on bagging this '06 that a customer dropped off a few weeks back. The hydrobooster is giving us problems, and has been fighting us every step of the way.

Not sure what I'm doing with the LT1 yet, I'm thinking maybe stroker kit

B, it will be our summer vacation, family hauler...the Ranger will be sticking around until our Civic is paid for and will be performing winter driving duty. Once that happens, we will more than likely get a 300 and sell the Ranger...but that is at least 1 year away.

B, install as is, it doesnt really need much freshening up.. it only has about 70K on it right now. The mechanic that looked at my dads engine said he could wobble the pistons around in the cylinders so this is certainly better than his. THough we dont know how his still runs.. I do have some oil coming from the breather but other than that and the valve covers leaking it seemed to be a strong engine. Heck I used it to pull the 85 mustang out of the hole it had been sitting in for 3+ years and around my property without the steering wheel unlocked with trans in park on the mustang.

You might want to check out the frame really good on the 87. Look around where the bed and cab meet on both sides. I seen one where the bed was the only thing holding the frame together. Something wierd about the 87s thats the only ones I have seen do it.

Re: What did you get done- Labor Day edition

I FINALLY got stuff done on my truck - I rebuilt my carb finally! Although it is the electronic quadrajet, it was way easy compared to the 76 Civic CVCC carb I did not too long ago. I have yet to put it on the truck - I started it up and it smoked like crazy. Not good - I have to SMOG this thing soon. I did replace the G62 temperature and oxygen sensor in my GTI. Both were easy. In a couple days I will be replacing my lower coolant hose and re-hooking up SMOG stuff and get my truck back on the road!

BTW My dad just bought a Vette - 1997 Black C5 w/ shift kit and intake. SOOO much fun. (auto unfortunatly - I prefer manuals but this is still way fun)
