Howdy, Intro, and a couple of ques & Pics
Howdy all, Norm here from Dalton Ma. I bought my second Chevy Truck last month. It's a 73 C30 1 ton dually. The outside is in good shape, and the inside well, she's seen better days. On Tuesday I bought a whole 91 suburban for parts. I plan on using the seats, carpet, dash, entire doors (they are power) and front clip (cool quad headlight set up). I already have the dash in place, I’m kicking my self, cause I don’t have a pic with the old, cracked, spray painted dash in it. But I’ll get some before pics tomorrow morning. Here's where my questions begin.
#1 how do the trim strips on the doors of the Burban come off? Please tell me it's just glue and not rivets or anything. #2 how hard is it to swap in the new Tilt steering column out to mine. The bolt in part is fine by me, but what about the wiring? I'm not real concerned about the cruise or the washers on the stalk, but I need to hook up the ignition, and the blinkers. Any good places to go for wiring info? #3 can anyone tell me if you can put on a "Lund style visor" when you have the cab clearance lights? I'm sure that I'll have a bunch more questions, but for now, that should do it. Oh yea, here is a before pic of my ol' dually, it's planning on being Painted black real soon. I can't stand the smurf blue that it is right now. Thanks Norm |

Re: Howdy, Intro, and a couple of ques & Pics
1. there are about 8-10 small phillips screws hiding in the carpet of the lower panel. Take those loose, and it will fall right off. If you are talking about the trim on the upper panel, there are quicknuts on the backside of the panel holding it all on. Be careful with them, as they get brittle with age.
2.not sure about the newer stuff with the wipers on the stalk, but the older columns had the wiring in the same order, with different shaped plastic plugs. Swapping out the plug was easy by backing out the wires, and transferring the plastic plug to the correct column. 3. It has been forever since I have installed one of those, but it seems like there used to be one specifically for the 1 tons with the clearance lights. Nice looking truck though. That should be a good start!

Re: Howdy, Intro, and a couple of ques & Pics
Has the frontend been converted to an '83-87 style already?
1) if the burb is a 91, most of it is glued on (if it is factory) you need a heat gun to remove it from the doors. 2) It shouldn't be too hard, but it won't be a bolt in. the wiring harnesses change about 4 times from 73-91. I would start with a Haynes manual. Right off the wipers and bright light switch are in different places.

Re: Howdy, Intro, and a couple of ques & Pics
Hey Ya'll, Thanks for the warm Welcome. I'm thinking I might pass on the tilt steering wheel. There is not even a close resemblance between the two, and I'm not the best on wiring. Just got the answer about the door trim, I was wondering about the outside stuff, that says 1500 on the driver's and passengers doors. Dropped some 3M adhesive remover on it, let it set, and off it came!
I guess I don't have huge plans for this truck, it's my daily driver, and I love having an old truck. I grabbed a dually cause I want to tow a trailer, and have my motorcycle in the back. I guess I big on over kill. I do know I'm gonna have it painted. Probably going for the satin black look, and toss some flames on the front, and on the dually fenders. The last owner updated the front end to an 81, so it don't look as old as it is. I'm kicking my self for not taking pics of the interior before I started working on it. the dude had spray painted everything on the inside electric metallic blue. dash, doors, everything. The pics I have of the interior have the new burban dash pad in it already, but you get the idea. I can't wait to get the rest of it all in, in the next few days. Well, take a look at the pics at the bottom, you'll see how sad it is. Thanks for the great answers, and well.... I'm sure I won't be a stranger here, there is lots of good info on this board! Norm PS Dalton is in western Ma, in the Berkshires. |

Re: Howdy, Intro, and a couple of ques & Pics
nothing like an old dually man. since you going for a hot rod look you should check out some wide tires for the back instead of the duals. i have seen it and it looks really nice. What motor is in the beast?

Re: Howdy, Intro, and a couple of ques & Pics
Well, would I be wrong in thinking that going from the 4 rear tires to 2 would effectively limit my load capacity? Plus them big wheels are big bucks, and I gotta drive this through the winter.... She's got the original 350, with a 4 speed, and the 4:10 rear. not fast, but it'll pull your house of it's foundation!

Re: Howdy, Intro, and a couple of ques & Pics
Actually, I found it on eBay. It was a Buy it now for 1800 bucks and there were no photos, and maybe a 10 word description. I emailed with him a few times, and drove almost 3 hours down to Berlin Ct, saw it, offered him $1500 and drove away with a smile on my face. It's exactly what I wanted, well, except for the blue paint.
