ENGINE SWAP VORTEC. 4X4 SUBURBAN
Just seeing if anyone know of any problems I'll run into swapping a 1998 chevy 350 into a 1970 suburban 4x4. Here's the lowdown Going to a electric fuel pump. Using an edelbrock vortec intake. Headers. Using the front dress off the orignal 1970 engine, including waterpump. Which flywheel do I use? Thanks for anyhelp that can be provided.

I don't think the flywheel will be a problem but your going to need the electronics off the 98

Not with that intake and a carb he won't.
If you have A/C, you might have a problem with holes in the heads. Other than that and the lack of a fuel pump hole (which you are already addressing) it should be a slam dunk. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. You need to use the flywheel / flexplate off the new engine. The bolt pattern on the crank changed in '86 when they went to the one piece rear main seal.

Was it just the shape, or was it the bolt pattern too? I have wondered this for a while, never had both in my hand at the smae time though.

Wouldn't be to shocked if the starters are not the same...bolt patern, tooth count...there's a couple variables there.

Flywheel off the 1998 worked with the the 1970 starter fine. Thanks guys.
Few other problems that I found was the alternator bracket on the 1970 had very little ajustment on the 1998 valve covers. Had to grind a bolt off the 1998 engine timing cover to get the waterpump to fit. Temperature sender hole is a different size (used the sender off the 1998, just cut the connecting wire off of it and spliced it). Otherwise it went very smoothly and is running great. Need to get the edelbrock carb dialed in though. |

I did it to mine, I used a newer 700r4 though
--driveshaft is a little different, and you probably want to push the motor towards the cab about 1-1/2" or so. I have pics somewhere of the motor - try looking at webshots, "find user" - primer67 and there are some older pics of when I first started the truck project. ------------------ 1967 C-10 Longbed rollpanned front&back '91 5.7 liter/vortec heads, 700r4 trans. holley headers, holley fuelpump, holley mufflers. converted to edelbrock performer/carter 750 hei/advanced recurve 5 bucks a plug even! "anything for the lady" soon to be lowered "a little" looking for a good tonneau, and cowl hood. |
