Temperature gauge shows hot, truck not - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I was ride around yesterday evening and looked down at the temperature gauge and it was pegged out as far as it could go to the hot side. Truck was running fine and showed no signs of overheating. I got home and shut the truck off and it stayed all the way over pass hot. I killed all the electrical current (main battery switch) and it never moved. Still that way this evening when I checked it and truck hadn't been run. All other gauges are working fine. Does anyone know what might have cause this and the fix? Thanks Randy

Check the wire going to your temp sender. It has probably feel against the exhaust or something

If it's all the way pegged hot that means it's grounded out, follow the wire, you'll probably find the problem fairly easily.

Thanks guys. I will check it out tomorrow. It had me worried that the gauge might be messing up but now it sounds like a possible easy fix.

mine did that. wire had fused to manifold. rewired and never happened again.

Every now and then the resistor on the gauge goes bad and produces the same outcome.If the sending unit wire is not shorted out anywhere, the you should look at replacing the resistor.

I have the same problem and mine is not shorted, where is the resistor you speak of?

It's possible the sending unit could be toast too, right?

I'd say the wire is grounding out also. I had that happen to me. When my sending unit went bad my temp gauge stayed cold and didn't move at all.

on the back of the temp gauge. There will be a piece of wire mesh or porcelian between two of the studs, that is the resistor

Well I fixed mine. When switching over to 7 gauge dash I put the temp wire on the "now dead" oil (blue) line. oops.
Works good now thanks.
