Best Gas tank for under the bed?

I am in need of a gas tank for underneath the bed of my truck. I plan on bagging the truck and don't want to see the gas tank from the back. I know they sell some alluminum ones, some stainless ones, and some steel ones. I was looking at the one that is in the Copperhead truck but dont really want to spend $800 for a gas tank. My truck is going to be a show/driver truck. One more thing. It needs to be for fuel injection. Thanks Josh

mark (fuelcellguy) makes the best out there!!! here are a few pics of the one he made me 18 gal and wont hang past the bumper ( or about 4 in from botom of frame... i'll measure when i get home)

I'll second the tanks by Mark Fowler (Fuelcellguy). He built my 16 gallon tank as well.

68shortstep - looks great - how do you plan to cover the rear of the tank and connect the ends of the frame?

I used the brace from Early Classic - very nice piece and a great price too

Ive got a good friend that builds custom sheetmetal anything, and I mean anything, headers, sheetmetal intakes, fuel cells, etc. He does this for a living, and is VERY good. I like that tank. How much did it cost to get it into your garage? I'm not going "bagged low" but I sure would like to have that space back in my cab and the bomb out of my back pocket!

Move it for space but don't think it's safer between the frame rails behind the axle:

Tank Location

The most basic step in the prevention of fuel spillage is to protect the fuel tank from foreign object penetration through the use of structural members of the vehicle. "Tank locations very close to the rear or front bumpers or tanks at hinge points of structural collapse for locations more remote from the bumper represent intrinsically dangerous installations."

The fuel tank should not extend to the side of the vehicle but should be cradled between the rear wheels to protect it from side impacts. The recommended location of the fuel tank for front-engine vehicles is the space between the rear wheels behind a sealed, metal firewall separating the rear seat backrest from the fuel tank space. The section immediately surrounding the fuel tank should be strengthened to provide protection from penetrating objects."

The stock location though not optimal is closer to the "recommended" location than what you are proposing.

So what you're saying is that moving the tank to the location between the frame rails, behind the axle is a bad idea? I think you better warn nearly every Muscle car enthusiast out there because thats where there tank is...

Read the article. Thats what the engineers say, and have said for years. They don't manufacture vehicles with the tank behind the axle any more for the reasons stated in the article. At least with those old cars their was a "crumple zone" of sorts. On a truck, the tank is not far removed from the bumper. I'm not arguing against the idea, just the idea it's "safer"...as it's not. Nor am I arguing leaving it in the cab is your bestalternative.

it has a fuel pimp intank ( 225$ ) and it cost me 645$$ if you dont have fuel injection it would be about 400$ ( he may work with ya to build a smaller tank or larger,cheaper,or more $$ )

I also purchased a tank from FuelCellGuy, I shopped around a LOT and he is by far the best deal out there, hands down.

I have some more shots of it installed - but that's the gist of it. I forgot what I paid for this entire setup with the internal Walbro fuel pump (for my LS1) for something like $650 for everything, including sending unit? Maybe it was a little more or a little less. I can't remember - all I know is it was a damned good deal.

I am going with the standard blazer thank because of cost and ease of use. I'm not too worried about the safety factor, but with the tank in the cab, I have no stereo room!

My priorities might be skewed, but at least I would have good tunes.

Mine is being moved for 3 reasons.

1) 6'3 does not fit into a 5'8 cab very well

2) Being an audiophile, I have to have great sound, subs and amp are a must.

3) About 8 years ago I lost a friend who was a passenger in a 71 long bed that was t-boned. I won't go into details but my friend Barry was burned because the tank split due to the impact.

I have a MAJOR problem with having gasoline as the back of my seat. True that the tests have shown that it may be in an unsafe place but I'd rather lose my truck in an accident instead of my Son, Wife or myself.

Aren't some guys using the S-10 Blazer fuel tank now? Supposedly smaller and doesn't hang as low?

I this in a lnog or short, If it is a long, buy a atank out of a 87 or so Suburban and plop here in . I have done it twice and it fits perfectly with no cutting. All I did was move the rea crossmember to the back and that was it.

I found a gas tank for an 87 that has the fuel pump in the tank. Do you use that too?

The pump may have too much pressure if you are just using a carb. If its just a carb you are using, dont power up the pump. I had done a V8 TBI conversion in a S10 years ago, and got tired ofthe problems I was haveing so I put a carb on top and run it for 2 years without changing the tank.

I have a big tank out of a 85 Blazer (31 gallon). I believe the older Blazers had a smaller tank like 17 gallon. You may want to check into one of those. Also most Blazer tanks came with a skid plate.

Moving the tank to the rear will not give you any more leg room.. It will allow for a hell of a stereo system but your seat will not slide back any farther
