Front drive shaft CV joint
How important is the CV joint on a front drive shaft. Mine is completely worn to death. I'm going to replace the shaft, and it would, of course, be a great deal cheaper to have one made without the CV, or double cardon joint, if you want to be technical.
My truck is a 1967 with no lift, and no hope of ever getting one while I own it.

Re: Front drive shaft CV joint
You will likely get vibrations at high speeds if you eliminate the double cardan joint since the u-joint angles on the front shaft are not set up for a single joint at each end. If you only use 4WD at slow speeds, you can probably get away with it.

Re: Front drive shaft CV joint
I rebuilt my cv joint back in 90 or so. If spicer still makes the parts its an option for you. If I remember right its not too hard of a job. I did it with hand tools.

Re: Front drive shaft CV joint
I had a new front drive shaft made w/o the cv joint 14 years ago and have never regretted it. At highway speeds, I can't tell any difference when in 4 wheel drive - of course the only time it's in 4 wheel drive on the highway is when I forget to turn the hubs or when driving in snow. I highly recommend the conversion!
BTW if you're near Denver, I got my new transfer case yoke from Drive Train Industries. Last edited by jacobs; 09-22-2006 at 10:27 AM. |

Re: Front drive shaft CV joint
2 things
you have to have one to get over the crossmember and with the married 205 it is so short that any flex will bind it up quickly. if you have a divorced tcase or a 203/205 doubler setup it would be long enough to get away with it. |

Re: Front drive shaft CV joint
My conversion was on a 1970 k20. It's tight above the crossmember but not that difficult. I've never had any problems with binding however I don't have any extra lift.

Re: Front drive shaft CV joint
I have a married Rockwell 221, not a 205. What difference will this make?

Re: Front drive shaft CV joint
Since you said you were not ever going to lift it then binding probably wont be an issue. jacobs had good luck with his, however, the factory felt that they needed one.
jacobs, how did you mount the the u-joint to the CV yoke on the transfer case? I'm guessing u-bolts?

Re: Front drive shaft CV joint
I purchased a new yoke that used u-bolts. Drive Train Industries is a large distributor of products for primarily pickups through semi trucks. I explained what I wanted to them and they found a yoke that would work since the old yoke was different. If anyone needs the Spicer number for a 205, I believe I still have the old box the yoke came in.

Re: Front drive shaft CV joint
My 1969 with the Rockwell T221 and a manual three speed came stock without a CV joint. When I lifted the truck I had to add on.
