$3,500`68 Stepside/Would you buy it?

It won`t sit for long. This car dealer has a basic`68 Stepside for sale for $3,500.My friend knows him and he may get down to $3g:fresh teal paint,6cyl/3spd,all original, not rustfree/pretty solid.I looked at the floor@the kickpanel,it`s solid. The paint looks cash!It has the bright trim on grille, white bumpers/hubcaps,and duals. The rockers aren`t rusted into the floor or theit top.Metal was riveted over the outer curved area,a good job, they`re still the original. The rear cab supports are bad,the bed wood has some rot in an area near the front.I know this was a quick "make it look good" paint job over a pretty darn solid/un beat-up original. It does look good!I could slap a set of wheels on and have a respectible lookin`ride. If it wasn`t painted,it would be alot cheaper and someday it`ll need more work,I know. But,I feel suckered in on this one.I have a clean/painted frame w/ECE 4/6 drop and rebuilt 5-lug suspension I could set the body on and sell this frame/drivetrain.I also just bought a`71 shortbed 4wd with alot of rust on the lower body that could be donated for under this truck.I could leave it alone and putt it around with a new set of whitewalls/full wheelcovers.

Buy it and drive it, it will make you smile

I do have to say, it does sound a bit high though.

MACCO works wonders with it's "resell" paint jobs, doesn't it.

Re: $3,500`68 Stepside/Would you buy it?

I bought mine for around the same amount (couple bucks more). It's rock solid, minor rust inside, but mostly surface, some in the rear cab pockets (pass side is moderate, but not awful), and there is some eaten-through rust under the battery. The paint was in good shape and it was "mostly restored".

Sounds like someone made yours look pretty. You'd need to decide with yourself: Is it worth paying someone $3500 for the $2000 they mighta put into this, then get it home to find out just how badly they really "covered up" what's really wrong with it, or would I rather spend $1k on a truck and then drop $2500 into it and know what I got in it? You could drive the one at the dealership now and enjoy it....or spend 6-12 months on a project and hope it looks as good as the one at the dealership.

I love the 68 stepside, and would probably buy it myself for $3000. But I would always be unhappy knowing I paid what I paid for that truck and knowing there are underlying issues like body cancer lurking underneath that fresh paint job.

Craigslist here has them for 1k-2k at least one a week on average. About half of them come from the old local plant that was here.

I wasn't referring to myself, but apparently you are too concerned with name's and colors to know the difference. It's cool, us old timers have seen your kind come and go ... mostly go. I predict the same for you as well. Time will tell.

I don't want your welcome. Nor does anyone need your smart ass replies concerning what color someone's name is. It has nothing whatsoever to do with you, it is between the member and the owner of this forum, and last time I checked you didn't qualify for the later.

Welcome to my *PLONK* list, Mr. "i wish i was a moderator" May.

i agree if you want it buy it, but that does sound fairly high for a no option truck with rust issues around here you can buy one that has already been fixed up for that with a v8 in it.

It sounds like a nice cruiser to me, Tim. That wouldn't last long up here for $3500 dollars if its in real good shape. I'd probably buy it if I had the money.....................and if it were closer.

Re: $3,500`68 Stepside/Would you buy it?

I thought that newbie was playing moderator telling me to post a WTB(which this ain`t)in the classified and was scratchin`my head.Next the posts got cruddy.I looked back and saw that it had been edited by LIZ,you know,"LIZ the administrator lady"?Makes sense now. So,c`mon guys,if you find your hairs raisin`,re-read.You may find you were jumpin`the gun and save yourself from chumpness. It`s all good.I don`t feel any bigger in blue than in pink.It takes more than the cost of a couple cans of gas to be lord over another. In my book, there ain`t nothin`that can put another over me or visa-versa.$.02

We don`t have these trucks around here for $1,000 much.If they are that cheap, they aren`t worth restoring. The only rust is in the rockers (still original/been covered) and at least one rear cab mount.Looking inside the bed it is very decent. The bed strips are all solid. The 38 year old wood is weathered, but only rotted in one area. The tailgate is straight and the fender flanges are not all rusted out.The floor is solid and so is the header panel. The interior is original paint. It has nice white dog dishes that are not dented and don`t have surface rust. The front bumper and grille, including surrounds, are straight. The door bottom hems look good. There is no rust in the steps or the seam between the bed.The floor is solid at the kick panels.
My friend told me about it and took me to see it.My friend is in the auto body business and was impressed and felt we could flip it for at least a grand more in my area,it`s in WVA.He also wheels and deals cars and Harleys. He does incredible deals. At his shop he has an unrestored`57 Belair that is 60s-style:first run Torque Thrusts.396,Muncie 4spd,roll`n`pleat.There`s a `70 SS396 convertible,`65 El Camino, and a`68 427/4spd convertible Vette with a solid body. All these he got for unbelieveable good deals. He bought a nice original`65 Panhead 1st year Electra-Glide w/sidecar for $7,000 and sold it the next day for $13,000.
I wish I had a picture.I`ll get one on Monday.I told my friend(Tommy)to let him know I`m interested in trading my`90 Blazer for it.We`ll see.
Although I know these trucks and their worth,I thought I`d get some input, that`s all.Cheaper is always better. But,I don`t think it`s to high. The paint is smooth and the body looks great.

Re: $3,500`68 Stepside/Would you buy it?

sounds like a fair price to me. i don,t like to spend that much on one myself because they all seem to turn intomajor resterations here but for a driver it's probably a good deal we all know how cheap these things are to maintain and how many trouble free miles they are good for with a little respect and care. and of course there is always somone out there who will pay way more for a truck that shines than it is worth. that being said only you know your plan and must decide if it,s worth it to you, i don't think you can get beat up to bad on it even after enjoying it for a season or two if you don't throw too much unnessary money at it

Re: $3,500`68 Stepside/Would you buy it?

Years ago I paid $5000 for a freshly painted '75 GMC 4x4. A month later both wheel wells on the bed were gone and I was pissed.

The good news is these trucks aren't as cancer prone as others, but it's still good to know what might be under the paint. For $3k, if it runs well and rolls straight, I would get it (if I was looking for a step).

Re: $3,500`68 Stepside/Would you buy it?

Yeah, when I said a "quick resell" paint job I think it was misleading. It`s a real nice paint job and the body is straight and smooth. The rust I mentioned is minor and I`ve seen few trucks escape it in the rockers. What I meant about the paint job is,other than that,it is unmolested, original, stock, and unrestored.Just a decent survivor.I`m sure it sat under a roof if not in a garage.I know this dealer (Hedgesville,WVA) has a hook-up with a Maaco shop and it is a good one(Winchester,VA).My friend has subbed from another Maaco shop (Frederick,MD) that recently changed hands and now sucks. He`s going to try to get this guy to hook him up with Winchester. My friend sold his business in Frederick and built a shop at his house (Berkeley Springs,WVA).He does high-end only, now. He does custom paint and does alot of Harleys and race cars.He has done body work for Maaco and he`s sent paint jobs to them to cut costs.Like many large national enterprises,Maacos are individually ownered & operated and vary from shop to shop. These days with the cost of materials,if you can hook-up with the right one,it`s a good thing. They paint cars for what some shops pay for materials. This is a $1,000 truck with a $2,000 paint job.I posted this for conversation and to get a broad perspective. Not because I don`t know what I`m doing or have doubts about the truck.I`m doing work near this lot and next week,if it`s there,I`m going to talk to the guy.I told my friend(Tommy)to see if he`d be interested in trading for my`90 Blazer,we`ll see.If I got it and keep it,I think I`ll keep it simple and run it.I`d like a header, lower springs, and car hubcaps, original full wheel covers,or smoothies,a tonneau, and chrome bumpers.I do have a truck I`m parting with a 6cyl/Powerglide combo for it...
