shaving gas filler

hey guys, I just got this crazy idea the other day...
instead of shaving the door filler hole on the cab and relocating it with a blazer tank and all that... what about custom making a flip-open lid in place of the filler neck hole, and cutting the filler neck on the tank down so you could put the cap on it, and flip the lid down over that, so it'll still be there, but not sticking out. On top of doing all that, you'd have to seal it from the inside of the cab, for fumes, but I don't think that would be too hard.

Has anyone ever seen something like this done? If so, how was it done I wonder.

Re: shaving gas filler

I saw this a few years ago in one of the classic truck magazines. If I remember correctly a modified hinge and cover from a honda was used as the door for the filler cap.

I don't remember seeing that done on a 67-72, but I do remember that being done to a 55-59 truck. I think it was red. Looked pretty trick.

I've seen it doen to a few classic chevys and furds. Trick is to use a filler from a car with a similar curve.
I think that some porche, BMW z3, some lexus all have nice curved doors.
Just keep your eyes peels for cars with the gas on a sweet curve.

You can cruise the local junkyard for inspiration!

here's a pic from a porche boxter. This would work vertically, I think. would depend on if you could move the fill tube position(ie, it might have to be used just the way it sits on the car)
you'd just have to graft the whole assembly, skin to skin, and it would be airtight and weather 'proof'. Then you could just use the new filler neck/cap and attach to your existing tank.

Kind of off topic but....

I swapped a complete 71 disk brake set-up under my truck. It had 5 lugs for a while, but I had such a hard time finding a 5 lug rear that would bolt in (for under $250) that I gave up and bought a set of Early Classic Enterprise 6 lug spindles. I already had the disk brake stuff set-up so the rotor swap took like an hour to do. Click on my "build thread" in my signaure and look on the last page. There is pics of them on there.

Re: shaving gas filler

the whole purpose of relocating the tank is not to be sitting on 20 gallons of gas in the event of an accident.

thing is, hopefully it'll never come down to my truck getting hit. And if it does, this topic has come up before, it would take a hard hit to actually hit the fuel tank. If you're in an accident that actually hits the fuel tank (such as a hard T-bone) I think you'd be SOL anyways. The truck would be SOL, as for the driver, I think a person could have enough time to get out of the vehicle before the tank did something really harsh, usually anyways. I'm not really concerned with the tank being in the cab, but if anybody has any evidence to contradict my idea on that, be free to share it.

As for the fuel doors, I'll have to look around, maybe. I am sure there's no Beamers or anything fancy like that around these junkyards. Not sure what to do...

As a retired firefighter of 14 years, 11 of those running MVA's on Interstate-25, the only issue I have ever seen with in-cab fuel tanks is fuel leaking into the passenger compartment if the vehicle landed upside-down.

exactly. I've never even worried about a tank splitting open from an impact. I would be woried about it leaking from being on its side, which is still dangerous, however.

Re: shaving gas filler

I was think this exact thing through in my mind earlier today, kinda crazy that someone else posted about this! I would love to shave the filler neck but don't want to go through the trouble of a tank relocation. Stay tuned, when I start cab work I am going to try something out!

Re: shaving gas filler

Though I appreciate the work it took to install that filler on the silver truck, it just doesn't look quite right to me.....probably because the space just isn't quite big enough to accomodate that big of cap.

Re: shaving gas filler

Yeah I don't really like that cap, I was thinking of fabbing up something that matched the curves of the sheetmetal there and hinging it so that you just flipped it open and pumped gas in, maybe could even make it spring loaded and have a lever inside the cab to open it so you don't even have to have an indention to get your finger in there. I am going to try some things on an extra cab I have but I will probably just leave it as it is, it would be alot of work to go about making one of these.

exactly! something that is smooth, and with the body line, except for the obligatory circle around it. Would be easy enough maybe to take the patch panel that fills in the hole, trim it around the edges a little, and weld a hinge to it, maybe?

Re: shaving gas filler

I also thought about putting a filler in the door jamb but I don't know of anyway to make that turn into the tank so that it would fill right. I know that honda S2000 have a gas filler in the door jamb (i think that is the right car) but theirs goes straight back I am sure, I don't think on a truck it could go back enough before it needed to turn to get into the tank, may do a little mocking up on few of these ideas on my next weekend at home that I don't have to work.

Re: shaving gas filler

I'll let you know soon enough. I just got off the phone with Hagens ordering one of their fuel door kits. After talking it over with the guy there, he said the curved kit would fit the fleetsides perfectly. The curve is a 32" radius, so that looks like about an 1/8" out in the middle from the top to bottom of the door.

Let us know how it comes out! Damn those doors are expensive, I think I am going to try and fab me one up from scratch, I will keep you guys updated on how it works if at all.

Re: shaving gas filler

For the time I would spend going out to find a yard that would have one and then cut it out, I am money ahead by just buying one that is ready to weld in with no fuss. Our yards are not as plentiful or friendly as from the stories I hear from the folks back east. So when I take all that into account, it's a helluva deal!
