Looking @ a '67, help me out.

I am not a newbie but havent been on since i sold my 81 GMC. I have a friend that has a 67 chevy in his back yard to sell. it is a 67 short step, has been sitting for 1 1/2 years. BUT they have started it up and ran it every couple of months. before it was put up the 350 4bolt main was rebuilt with 4,000 miles on it, also has a 350turbo. it was going to be a project but the owner moved for a job and now has plenty of money but no time (must be nice). now he just wants it out of the yard cause his parents dont wanna see it anymore. the driver side window is gone with plastic over it. he states that if i was to buy it he knows he could get it started right there and drive it off if the tires are good. MY QUESTION: WHAT DO I NEED TO LOOK AT WHEN I GO SEE IT WEDNESDAY? I WANT A DAILY DRIVER but a project with possibilities. WHAT ARE THE AREAS OF CONCERN? WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING YOU FOR BETTER ADVICE? HE IS ONLY ASKING $500.

I guess rust is the hardest thing to repair but texas trucks usually aren't too bad depending on what part of the state they are from. Check the cab corners, inside & out, bottoms of the doors (get down on your hands and knees and look clear underneath), body mounts & floorboards (again, look underneath), above the windshield on the inside and outside (make sure there are no bubbles in the paint). Basically the same places your '81 might have had some rust (unless it was rust free)... If he can get it started maybe you can drive it around the yard or even back and forth just to see if things work. Be careful of the brakes though if it has been sitting for a while they may not work.

Maybe some of the other folks will add to this.

I guess my feeling is if it runs & drives and has a title it has to be worth 500 bucks unless it is a rust bucket....

Man get on your back and really look at the underside of the cab and bed. Look at the crossties for the bed.Radiator support under the battery. And the inner fenders where they bolt to the radiator support. Rocker panels and cab corners are notorious for rusting on these trucks, but in IMO they aren't that hard to replace.

In 1997 I bought my daughter a 68 short step for her 16th birthday cause that is what she wanted. . It was a 6cyl ,3 on the tree with no power steering or brakes. I wasn't really into our trucks back then and this truck was a 2 owner with rust and real rough looking. In the fall of 2004 ( 2 years ago) the clutch went out of it and she didnt have the money to fix the clutch. I could have bought the truck from her but really didnt need another project so she decided to sell it. She lived on a semi busy street with a driveway so I told her to park it in the driveway with a For Sale sign in the window and ask 1800.00 for the truck. It took 2 hours for the door bell to ring and she got 1700.00 from the guy and he didnt even start it ,just towed it home. So to you I'm sayin for 500.00 you cant go wrong so buy it and if its to rough for you to fix I'll bet you someone will pay you at least a 1000.00 or more if you want to sell.

Thanks guys. Im supposed to go look at it wednesday. ill take pics. also i know that the 67 and 68 have the slanted hoods, is this popular? Is there anything special about these year of trucks?

The slanted hood is VERY popular! A lot of 69-72 Chevy owners switch the front end to a 67-68. The grill is just clean. The hood slant is smoother. There were no sidemarkers for these trucks in 1967, so it has a nice shaved look on the fenders.

Also, 1967 was the last year for the smaller rear window design. If this 67 has that too, that just makes it even cooler. AND it already has a V8 that is supposedly rebuilt. Even if that thing was a rust bucket, the motor alone would be worth 500 bucks (supposing it runs).

These trucks do pretty good against rust, save for the rocker panels and cab corners. There are patches available and you can do it yourself or pay someone. I would be most worried about the condition of the area above the windshield. Mine is rusted out and I have no idea what I'm going to do with that. Even still, it should be ok for another 10-15 years.

well im not sure what is original. should I get numbers from the truck? where do I find them?

Well, the VIN number is located on a plate along the rear side of the door jamb.

Engine casting numbers are actually at the rear of the engine block, so good luck trying to see those. The VIN number should tell you the original motor, body style, and 1/2ton, 3/4 ton, or whatever. IT also says the manufacturing plant and.... that's about it. Anyway, if original, then the truck should be sitting on a frame with 6 lug axles, a short stepside bed, and the year given by the VIN will match my description of the 1967 features.

Most of these trucks came with a 250 L6 and a 3-on-the-tree. The 350 is not original, because it wasn't offered in 1967. The 283 and the 327 were the main V8's of that year.

I agree with the above, for that price as long as it runs, drives pretty good and doesn't have a lot of rust buy it.
Look at the core support under the battery. The
windshield posts and above the windshield inside are the hardest places to fix, that rust

Well, if anyone else lives in Texas they know Wednesday it rained FOREVER. So, i havent seen it yet but should go see it Sunday. I'll let you know what i find. -DANIEL

Well, i finally got to go see it. so here is the dirt on it (with pics). the rocker panel on the passenger side is shot and the drivers has a TON of bondo on it. the cab corners look ok. the bottom of the doors are rusted out. the bed has one line 6 inches long where the paint is bubbled, but the steps and fenders are PERFECT. and of course from what i can see of the bed the origional wood is rotted out but see no damage (of course the bed is full of crap). the window was installed right before it sat and he did a crappy job of the instal, but the area aound it looks like it is only surface rust. the area right under the battery tray has a softball size hole but the rest of the support looks good. after we talked i founf that the truck hasnt actually been started in a year and not drivin out of the yard in 1.5 years. when the motor was rebuilt a edelbrock high rise and carb were installed, also when they put in the 350turbo they installed a trans cooler (cannot remember what it is called for sure). He feels if we get air in the tires, a battery, and some starter fluid, it will start with no problem. My real concern is i need a vehicle, this is my dream truck, with a great price, but i have no body work experience, and some basic mechanical experience. am i diving into something big here? how much to get it bought and road worthy, it hasnt been inspected since 2000, but since i live in the country i dont have to worry bout bad inspections. Here are the pics. i cannot remember if i mentioned everything, just ask me and ill try to answer.

If the bed is as clean as it looks, you could probably get double your money for it around here.... not to mention any other non-rusted out sheet metal.

That's a '68, by the looks of things. '67s didn't have side markers.

If somebody else said this already, I apologize, I just FF'd to the pics.

Rockers are already shot, but the cab corners don't look too bad. Check under the truck to see how the floors and cab supports are. Front passenger's fender could be eaten out, too.

Looks like it was originally a 6 cylinder truck, with the V8 mounted in the 6 mount holes.

What it comes down to is his asking price. There are a lot of nice old trucks down there, possibly with less rust.

Check and make sure VIN # match title. Looks like it could have had a cab swap.
