wierd sound?????
I got a strange sound that I've been trying to figure out what it is. Its coming from up front, whether its from under the hood or underneath her I don't know. It sounds like one of the fan belts are loose but i just put 2 new belts on her and checked them to make sure they are as tight as they should be. Ive been experiencing bit of slow acceleration lately as well and i don't know if this sound could be part of the problem. If anyone got any idea about this sound let me know.

Re: wierd sound?????
Is it a squealing, rubbing, chattering, pinging?
Gotta describe the sound a bit better Russ

Re: wierd sound?????
The sound isn't constant. Like when im just idleing the sound is slow but it speeds up when i speed up. The sound goes with the engine. And its something like a rubbing sound i guess. Its hard to describe. would it be that i have a bearing gone somewhere. i hope not.

Re: wierd sound?????
The water pump on my 77 made a similar rubbing sound just before it threw it's seal, and started leaking like crazy, but make sure that is the problem before you replace it. It helps if you take an old rad hose or something, put one end against your ear, plug the other, then move the end of the hose around the engine until you find where the noise is loudest.

Re: wierd sound?????
Correct me if im wrong but under the vacuum motor on the air cleaner unit there is a hose that connects to the engine. its connected by 4 rivets and on my truck the 2 top rivets are out and the hose is basically just hanging there by the bottom 2 rivets. would this cause the sound im hearing.

Yeah, if you've got air being sucked in through there, it may make a bit of a whistle -- Try some duct tape, and see if the noise goes away

Re: wierd sound?????
Certainly could be a vacuum leak.
Maybe try picking up a mechanic's stethoscope at your local tool/parts store (not very expensive, but a great addition to a tool cabinet). They look the same as the doctor version except instead of a "pad" on the end, they just have a long metalic probe. With the engine running, place the end of the probe on different (non-moving) engine parts. If the parts are making noises, you will hear it clearly in the ear-pieces. For example, a bad bearing on an alternator would be quite easy to hear by simply placing the probe on the alternator bracket or on the alternator housing itself. The vibrations (sound) are easily transmitted through the metal bracket or housing and then through the probe into your ears. Just an idea to help track your problem. |

Re: wierd sound?????
turns out i had 2 different noises. i got one fixed but im still trying to figure out what the other is. they both sound similar. the one i got fixed was that 2 of my spark plugs came loose and i was getting blow by from around the plugs. so the other sound kinda sounds like that. i'm trying to date back to when i first heard the sound because it seems like there's something holding my truck back from the acceleration and power it used to have. i don't hear this sound when the truck is just idling but when i start going at around 10 mph i can hear it really plain. i think im goin to get it checked out anyway but maybe theres someone who knows what im talking about. i do understand that its hard to describe sounds to people in writing so its hard to tell people what it could be.
