I am doing a 52 with a big block, but we don't have it far enough along probably to do you any good. I think DWCSR is puttting a big block in his truck, I am not sure what year his is though. Check my signature for a link to my project thread.

Mine isn't a comaro clip but its close. I have aTBird rack on a 75 C10 crossmember in a 58.

Mine will be a camaro clipped '56 big block. You running into difficulties??

to many to mention but nothing a plasma cutter and welder couldn't fix.
The camaro clip is easier than what I did. If you haven't done it yet look a MII front ends or the one from www.RBsobsolete.com

yeah im having prolems with firewall clearance im rebuilding my uncles tubbed 55 buit in the early 90's and they notched the firewall for the valvecovers just want to get the motor forward and off the firewall and fix firewall. anyone know where to get a repo. firewall?

We got ours from *****in Products. It was smoothed and set back 4 inches.

I am doing a 52. It was actually easy to do....I was kinda dreading it but all in all I didn't have any problems. There are some pictures in here, I probably have a few more at home if those don't work....I can e-mail if you want.

i've been looking into get a firewall from http://www.nolimit.net/

They have you specify the motor you're using so i'm guessing they could make sure it's going to work for your application


not to hijack the thread...but anyone have any experience with no limit?

No I didn't do any special bracing. I left as much of the floor in as possible to keep things in place. So far everything is ok. I have to wait until I get home to e-mail you some pictures. I only have a couple more that are not on my page so I will send them to you.

I got my 4" recessed firewall and floor from Direct Sheetmetal. Expensive but fit like a glove and worth every penny. I'm doing a '57 big block.

Will the stock heater box work with the recessed wall?

I don't have the factory heater box. Mine must have been added at the dealership because they had to drill new holes through the firewall. There's about 10 1/2" from the kick panel to the recess. I can measure this weekend if you need a closer measurement. I may not even run a heater, I think the big block will keep me warm.

firewall looks very nice would like to do one in the 55. where did u get the firewall, how much was it, was it easy to install and aobut how long did it take?

I bought it "direct" from Direct Sheetmetal, 4" recessed firewall was $372 and the matching toe/floor boards and hump were $251 plus shipping. Once all the old firewall and floor was out the new one slipped right in. I would say within a 1/16" to 1/8" max. A few vise grips and it was there. The floor and toe board were more of a pain. I finally figured out the body mounts under the floor were not in the same plain. I had the frame and cab perfectly level when I started. The drivers side was fine but the passangers was high (up) by at least 1/2"! A little persausion with a big hammer some heat and c-clamps got it in line. That allowed the floor to sit perfectly level and square. The toe boards (the total kit is 7 pieces: firewall, floor left and right, toe board left and right, and hump) took some careful tweeking to sit right. There is a lip on the bottom of the firewall that the toe boards sit on so I had to bend the boards to fit that and then the rear angle had to sit flat to the floor. I have a set of Clecos that really came in handy. I had everything in and out about a dozen times. No kidding. The toe board is at a different angle than stock so you have to make triangular pieces to fill the gap on each side. The hump is adjustable so that fit fine.

How long did it take? Hard to say because I kept putting off the welding until I was sure the motor and tranny (TH400) were positioned just right. I made my own motor mounts and used a Jim Meyers tranny mount. Figure two weeks. I have more pics if you want.

I bought my '55 pro-street already finished.Its on a Camaro clip.I noticed with the firewall pushed back ,lost leg room on the inside(No heater).It also has a 396 motor .All & all I'm happy with it ..

How much leg room do you think you've lost with the new set-up? I have decided to go Big-Block on my '55 and I like the look of your firewall alot. I like to stretch out much as possible when I drive. I called Direct Sheetmetal today, and they said that they have a new version of the big-block 55-59 firewall that will enable you to use your stock toe-board. I still think, however, that you will have to build a new trans cover if you go this route. Your truck looks great so far, as a matter of fact, looking at your truck made me decide to with the 454 instead of the 350. I've got a Camaro clip, so the mounts will work. Torque is good.

How bad do you think it would be to fit the directsheetmetal firewall
to the stock toe boards. I ordered one today with out the floor kit?
My stock floor is perfect, no rust or problems.

I called Direct a few days ago, and the guy told me that the pictures on the website were of the old version. He sounded like it wasn't a difficult installation. I'm just curious how you tie the old and new parts together (flange or butt-welded). I'm with you, my toe boards are perfect also. They just have a bunch of factory holes for the assorted factory linkages that I'll probably weld up and redrill as necessary. When you get the firewall, let us know how it looks.
