capacity of rear diff? 12 bolt please hurry!
Im supposed to be driving this thing to la, then to az today need help!well, i couldnt get that doggone plug out, it had been broke several times in the past it looks like, and nothing i have will get a grip on it, so i took off the rear diff cover, and drained all the old nasty fluid, it was kindy muddy, hehe, any way, i need to know how much to put back in, because i am going to be filling it up through the vent hole, (that can be done right, as long i as know how much it is supposed to hold?) by the way, in case needed to know, this is a 69 gmc 4x4, i think it is full time four wheel drive, but i am not real; sure, any way, it has 6 lugs, and the back diff has twelve bolts. the plug in on the front of the diff, on the passenger side, and there is no drain hole, so the help would be appreciated. Chilton's says it is supposed to be 1/2" below the vent hole, but that doesn't help you. I asked the guy at autozone, and he pulled it up on the computer...2 -1/4 quarts.
Chilton also said... Front axles use SAE 80W-90, GL-5 Gear Lubricant Rear axles use SAE 80W-90 Gear oil. Not sure what the difference is....

hmmm, well my vent hole is on the top of the diff, while the fill hole is on the bottom alf of it, maybe you meant 1/2 inch under the fill hole? otherwise it wouldbe kinda hard, and i had been told somethiby auto zone before but it was wrong, so i kinda stopped trusting them, but that sounds like a good number, i will give it a shot, thanks HArry, hell it might be in my manual.

Yes, my mistake...1/2 below the fill hole. I put 2-1/4 quarts in mine, but had it the axle off the truck facing down. I just poured it in the rear an put the cover back on. I have no idea if it is near the fill hole or not.

well, i put two quarts in, then it was hard for to take, kept having to wait for it to go down so i decided that two quarts is enough, only a little over one quart came out, and that stuff was yucky. by the way, i thinki have some kinda locking diff or something, its got the ring gear, and 4 othergears faceing in on themselves, one day im gonna take a picture. any way, thanks for the help

There are four spider gears in the normal differential. It should have a tag on it if it is a posi unit. They take special oil. Some of the posi units have springs in them.
