I'm new here
Hello from Oklahoma, this is the best link on the web. I do have a question though, I have a 1972 that I am rebuilding and for the engine I have a 350 bored 0.40 over out of a 1988 suburban. It has 2 bolt mains, should I have it machined for 4 bolt?? Machined for 383. I am also going to use vortec heads. What cam and intake would get me to about 400 hp??
Ant input would be appreciated. Also relocating the fuel tank, I have a tank from the same suburban. Also going air ride. I want to put in a floor shift for 700r4, and build a custom console. I will be asking a lot of querstion, hope ya'll don't mind. |

Re: I'm new here
If I recall the 4 bolt mains are nice when you start reving the heck out of it, like around 6000 to 8000rpms. They usually came in factory hi performance and heavy duty applications. Now days it seems all the crate engines are 4 bolt design. Welcome from Texas!

Re: I'm new here
If the motor is apart, and you plan on adding a supercharger later, then i would say yes, have the main cap splayed, otherwise i agree with everyone else.
since your motor is .040 over, a standard 383 crank and a decent cam should get you to 400 easy. plus they are fairly easy to come by at a decent price.

We live for questions. We'll give our opinions anyway but if asked then we are vindicated for expressing them.

Re: I'm new here
Welcome to the board from NW Ia. Ive got a buddy that races a 56 chevy & it SCREAMS. Its running 2X4 carbs 6:50 gears, 6500 converter with a small block & 2 bolt mains. My dad always said "Its just two more bolts to remember to torque" What Im saying is its not that big of a deal & if it really bothers you that you cant say you have 4 bolt mains, just lie & say you do. It will be our little secret...

Re: I'm new here
Welcome from Northeast Tenn. Just one thing save you some money down the road. What ever cam you decide to get. Get a good one like a Comp cam and lifters. I have replaced a many that wipe very easily.I won't mention there names. Mostlly due to bad lifters. I have had a comp cam in 3 rebuilds and it is going in my 4th. No wear showing. Oh by the it is a Comp 280H. Summit part # cca-k12-212-2. I bought the whole kit so everthing worked out really nice for me.
My motor Dynoed at 435 hp at 5500. 350 4bolt .030 overbore. and a good set of heads that I worked over majorly. NJow this is my personal experience. Maybe others have there own opinions of comp cams. |

Re: I'm new here
bob, Here is the link to "The Goodwrench Quest" which was a Chevy High Performance build of a 350 crate engine to 408 hp using bolt-on parts like Vortec heads, Comp Cam, Edelbrock manifold and Holley carb. Very easy and straight forward modifications. Enjoy...and welcome to the board from Seattle, WA.

Try adjusting valves while the motors running. My comp lifters will shot oil on the garage wall if not careful. try adjusting a summit cam and lifters, and they Barely dripp the oil out. So possible a summit cam but leave there lifters alone. There cheap for a reason Last edited by BarryB; 11-20-2006 at 11:27 PM. |

Re: I'm new here
Oh forgot, My motor now has been machined for the 383 stroker, and I have estimated it to have 485 hp. (Desktop Dyno) and forgot what the torque is suppost to be. With the same cam.

Re: I'm new here
Welcome from Colorado.
My brother and I were having this conversation about a week ago. He told me that some racers are seeking two bolt mains because the engine block will have a little more flex with the frame, trans, and everything in general. No more cracked blocks even with high HP. Makes me wonder if I'm just gullible.

Re: I'm new here
Something I've been told is that a 2 bolt is more desirable even for high HP applications. The opinion was that having a 2 bolt machined for splayed 4 bolt mains gave more strength than a factory 4 bolt. The webbing in the mains isn't compromised by the extra bolt holes.Since I have never had enough $$$$ to build a 700 HP engine I gueass I will have to go on the popular wisdom.

Re: I'm new here
Cant really blame the cam. Almost all lifters now are made overseas. That & oil isnt what it used to be anymore, which makes braking a cam & lifters in not what it used to be either. There are a couple good online lifter articles & I can try to find them if you want them...

Re: I'm new here
Yeah cornfed63, my thoughts exactlly. Nothing is the same since everything well seems like everything is made overseas or Mexico. but to answer the question go with a name that is well established.

Re: I'm new here
I sold my buddy my old 383 powered S-10 when I got my 70 SWB. And we just put in one of them new Lunati Voodoo cams the other day. HOLY ****, that woke the little truck up.
It came with new Melling lifters....and yes BarryB, I threw them in the street and reused the same Rhoads lifters Ive been running in that engine since the first rebuild. |
