Fuel pump is leaking oil - where to get gaskets for it?

My fuel pump is leaking oil, I believe from the circular gasket that sandwiches the two halves. It seems to be seeping up through the screws and sitting on the top of the pump. (Assuming there's oil in this part of the pump.)

The part that bolts up to the engine block is dry.

Anyhow, I can't find this gasket listed anywhere. Is it a standard gasket or specific to the different brands of fuel pumps? Or do I just make one or buy a new pump, they're probably cheap.



I just got done replaced the pan gasket, front main, pump to block gaskets, and everything in between because oil was blowing everywhere after I put 5 quarts in it. (I learned afterwards it has a 4 quart oil pan)

Id just get a new pump. They are usually dirt cheap. That would be my opinion.

you can make a gasket for cheap// you can also put thread sealer on the bolts even cheaper

Just in case: I had a similar problem once and a bolt had fallen out of the front of the block down low right around the corner from the fuel pump. First noticed a smoke screen in the rear view and thought holy cow!!!! I blew motor. But a new bolt and permatex and it was all fixed.
Ya might check that out. I think the holes are extra accesory mounting holes.

The hole that you have the ground cables hooked up is where you can get the leak. Take the bolt out and seal it if in doubt, looks okay in picture though.

I cant see if this is an AC pump or not, if it is hang on to it. Where the pump bolts to the block, around the edge of the pump will be the part number. A chevy dealership can tell you what you have or what it came off of............Joe

Can anyone ID this pump? is it worth keeping or should I toss it?

It has 5K miles on it if it was put in new with the rebuilt motor.

And while we're at it, someone else mentioned a pipe plug in that area that could leak. I'm not seeing any oil openings there. There are two bolt holes on the front of the block, one is being used for the chassis ground strap. Both are dry as a bone.

I might be wrong here.....but I think thats the old Holley style aftermarket fuelpumps.

But yeah, just buy a new one....they're like $12

Change that fuel filter though regardless, that things looking nasty.

With no parts stores open for the next 36 hrs, I decided to dig into it...

I got it running, and with no leaks. Here's the innards of my fuel pump:






The oil is never supposed to make it out of the neck of the fuel pump. There's a rubber oring that goes there, and the small metal ring is a press-fit into the neck of the pump to keep the oring in place. From sitting too long, the oring siezed up onto the copper(?) fuel pump diaphram rod and was pulled loose, allowing oil to pool on top of the diaphram.

You can see in the second pic, there's a tiny hole in the top half of the fuel pump near where it bolts to the block. I presume this is where my leak was. This hole is to let the upper half of the diaphram breath to atmosphere as it pulses up and down. The fuel is pulled in through a poppet style check valve on the upward stroke, then forced out through an identical one (that is installed in the opposite direction), on the way back down. The diaphram stroke is only about 1/4"

That was fun. Gotta love the simplicity of it all.

that is not a gasket, its the diaphram. I suggest getting a new pump. while you're at it get one of those neoprene gasket/diaphram gaskets for between the block and pump. I think Earl's sells them through places like Jegs or Summit.
I commend you on using the good clamps for the fuel line and the one piece oil pan gasket. but I would loose the plastic fuel filter.
