Post Antenna Question

I broke my antenna 2 days ago and was wonder how hard it is to change out the antenna lead from the fender to the radio? Anyone messed with this stuff before? BTW did our antennas have the coil on the base of the mast? Trying to figure out if this is the original or not? Its still usuable i just have to replace the base for the most part, thanks!

Our antennas are still available from GM. I just put one in my Blazer and it cost about $40. The mast should have a bowtie stamped in it and no coil spring. They should have a ball on top, a plate that goes under the cowl( formed to fit the curve) and a 90 degree bent in the end for the radio. I don't have the part number handy but I saved the box and will post it later. I have never replaced the base just figured to get a new one since I couldn't find an aftermarket that fit without moving in the base.

MJN, is that a teloscoping antenna? I always thought the one on my old Longhorn was original, but I know there was no bow tie on it.

Longhornmail, mine looks to be original as well. Its telescoping w/a coil at the base. I don't have a bowtie stamped on mine either and haven't seen this on any of our trucks, interesting......

The antenna isn't telescopic, and the bowtie is on the base below the cowl. The mast is a solid SS rod, long and pretty big around. If I wasn't in Study hall at school right now I would get the ACDelco part number for ya. If I remember I will do it tonite but we'll see. When I replced the antenna on my Blazer it had the bowtie and so I found one at a swap meet not thinking that GM still made them.

MJN.......

I would be very interested in the info on the antenna too. I am trying to figure out what to do with mine. I don't want a telescoping one, I want a single mast but I don't have a good base for one. mine are all junk. does that one have a base that looks original? thanks

I don't have a digital camera or else I would post a pic of all the pieces and the antenna. I even looked at one this weekend. Tonight I will post the part number so you can go to the dealer and get one. I have never seen any trucks with the same antenna, maybe because of aftermarket or unbroken ones, but this should be the original thing.

Cool

When I took my orignal ant. out to have the french electric put in it was solid. It wasn't that hard to get out. The base had the half moon looking peice on it, and the under fender peice locked it up against the fender. The lead wire ran through the fire wall by the ac.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

how in the heck do you replace the whole ass.bly? seems to me that you cant very well access the cowl to make the little "feet" on the bottom-side slide up to let you pull it out.halfway tempted to just replace the mast only(i've got a screw off mast from the base type now).whatayasay, guys?

You might need two people but it is possible to do yourself. Just pull the cowl panel up and unscrew the nut that holds the base to the cowl. Then pull the cable through the firewall. The worst part is getting everything together while holding the cowl. It is realatively esy job and can be tackled in about a half hour.

I take my antenna off, kinda whenever I put my truck cover on. I just unscrew the nut on top and there are little feet kinda that swivel, kinda like those screws that you put in ceilings that fold up and you put it through the hole and they expand but without the spring, anyone understanding me here?

Maybe I am reading these posts wrong, but I thought I would go for some clarification. Our trucks did come with telescoping antennas. My understanding is that if you got an AM radio you got a telescoping antenna. AM/FM you got a solid mast. The solid mast is still availabe from GM. The telescoping is no longer available, but GMC Paul sells one that is about as close to the original as you can get. I hope this helps.

Yah i pull it up with the wire still attached and just lay it down on the cowl when I put the cover on. And it is a telescoping with a straight end on the wire where it hooks up to the radio.

Darren is right. Either should work with either antenna. I was just stating what the factory did. It seemed some were confused as to why theirs wasn't a solid antenna when they were sure it was original. I hope this helped clear it up.

Is that part # for the whole antenna? I just ordered one. Price $10.48. We'll see!

What does the factory hole in the cowl look like? Mine is oval shaped about 1" by 1.5" I can't find an antenna to fit at Canadian Tire. The broken antenna I removed had to be shimmed up with a washer and still poked out over the fender. Will a factory antenna work?
