hello new guy here with a weird question
hey there folks just found the site and thought i would ask a question. i have a 67 chevy truck that i bought a while back and when i bought it i took it down and got it tagged and all that then i got my new title back and went to make sure that the vin matched and what do you know the vin on the title didnt match the vin plate i thought well just a typo, but then i got to looking back at some paperwork that i got with the truck and all that had the same vin as my new title so it got me wondering what was going on was it a typo from years ago that no one ever tried to fix or what. there is only one letter that is different on the title than the vin plate everything else matches someone told me that if the last 6 number of the vin match then it should be fine and the last 6 do match the letter that is different tells you where the truck was built so i guess what im asking is can you have 2 different truck from 2 different assembly plants with the same last 6 numbers or are the last six just for that truck and no other one will have them. sorry for the long post just wanted to give some back ground on it so if anyone can help me i would appreciate it thanks alot

Re: hello new guy here with a weird question
Hey neighbor and fellow Arky. Welcome to the forums. Lots of good info here and some great guys. Uh, and gals...
It is quite possible sometime in the past when registering the truck the clerk hit the wrong key and didn't catch it nor did the owner. I would think as long as all the numbers are a match the one letter difference won't make any differrence. I'm not an officer nor a member of the DMV though. I'd ask a car dealer or two and get their opinion on it then call a DMV in another town and run it by them.

Re: hello new guy here with a weird question
when I got my longhorn, it had a typo on it... on number was off, I can't recall which digit, but since it was an out of state title, i had to call the PO in PA and he had to retitle it and then transfer the title to me again.

Welcome to the board from South Mississippi. Call the DMV or tax office (if it's like Mississippi) and ask, but don't give any personal info.

Re: hello new guy here with a weird question
hey thanks guys for all the help and hello to all of you as well, i will be trying to get some pics of my ol' 67 up on here not sure how to do it but i will try to figure it out. might be a while because the truck is at a friends house right now cause we have been working on it. i called the dmv and they didnt have any record of the vin number thats on the plate just a record of the one thats on the title and they told me to call the police and they could do a vin verification but im afraid if they do and it is stolen then im in hot water and the guy that i got the truck from is no where to be found now so i dont know what to do really i guess just get a vin verification and if its stolen then just have to try to find the guy i got it from but the thing is that the guy i got it from never tagged the truck come to find out the guys name that was on the title was not the guy i got it from i guess he sold it to the guy i got it from and then he sold it to me heck i dont know it gets more confusing everytime i turn around lol. but anyway a little about the truck its a 67 short bed, we built a 377 stroker and put in it with a 350 turbo trans with shift kit and stall conv., right now has a high gear posi rear end but gonna change that cause it has no take off but will peg the speedometer and then some on top end, has rally wheels ,and a lot of body work to be done

Re: hello new guy here with a weird question
On mine the VIN number matched but the year was wrong. The title said 69 but the truck was a 67. The fine folks on here were able to decode the VIN for me and I took this info with me to the title office and they said it was possible someone had entered the wrong number in the past so they fixed it.

Re: hello new guy here with a weird question
I had the same happen to my daily driver, mix up at the dmv we didn't catch it until a survey was sent to us by the ins co, filled it out and sent it back to them and they told us we didn't have that vehicle insured and would be dropping us if we didn't do so. Duh I guess it happens everywhere, the worst part is you have to do all the leg work for their screw up. good luck and welcome.

Re: hello new guy here with a weird question
First I'd do a carfax search and see if the VIN that's actually on your truck shows up. Then do the one on the VIN on your title. If it doesn't show up as stoled or scrapped, then call the DMV and ask them if they or the local police will do a VIN verification because there is 1 letter off from whats on the Title.
I brought a truck from overseas and it was harder getting the paperwork from Toyota Japan stating that it was all USA DOT compliant than it was to get the title fixed that they screwed up overseas in Guam. The lady at the DMV came out, verfied the correct VIN and issued me a title with the correct VIN on it right there. This was in Texas, so call and find out who verified VIN numbers in your state.

Re: hello new guy here with a weird question
Here in MD if it is already titled in your name, you take a pencil tracing of the vin into the MVA and they can fix it. Welcome to the boards!!

Re: hello new guy here with a weird question
notmrgoodwrench
Welcome to the best truck board on the web There are two other items where the VIN # is located however they are both probably long gone. 1. The protecto plate this item is usually included with the paperwork along with the trucks original manual these items originally came with the truck. This was for validating warranty service 2. The build sheet. These are usually stuffed into the springs of the original seat and sometimes are found behind the gas tank. Check the numbers against the ones on the frame these are usually located on the top of the frame on the driver’s side I think one is inside the engine compartment and the other is just under the driver’s floorboard. These should contain the same last six digits of the VIN # which wont verify much except that you have the original frame to your truck. I think what you have here is a typo from back in history.

Re: hello new guy here with a weird question
hey there just wanted to give an update here i had a lady that works for the police dept. check my vin number out and she said that it came back as nothing .there was no record of that vin number at all. so i guess maybe it was messed up from the get go and no one ever tried to fix it or something. so i feel better now knowing that it is not stolen or something like that but im not sure what to do now she didnt really know what to tell me either,i guess i will have to take the info i got from that lady and go to the tag office and see what they tell me i guess they will give me a new title with the right vin on it but anyway thanks to all of your input on this and im hoping to get some pics on here soon

When I got my truck the title said K10. Its been a C10 from birth. Just tell them to correct it or leave it like I did...

Re: hello new guy here with a weird question

Re: hello new guy here with a weird question
Years ago I bought a 68 GMC tow truck, it was originally a PA vehicle. Some genius appearantly entered the PA title number as the VIN when it was transfered to MD. The previous owner never caught it and neither did I until I had already titled it. Hadn't tagged it yet but was looking through all my titles one night and noticed the VIN didn't look like any GM vin I had ever seen. I wound up having to get an Inspection tag and drive it to the State Police Garage and have them check out the truck. After about 2 or 3 hrs of them crawling all over my truck and they figured out that the number on the title didn't appear anywhere on the truck they did a title search on the truck from new. Voila, the PA title had the correct VIN. The MVA guy looking through the paperwork still couldn't find where the wrong number came from. I was sitting there with him and happened to catch a glimose of the PA title copy and saw that the PA title number almost matched the Wrong VIN( even had a wrong digit at that ). They simply issued a new title with the correct VIN but do you think they would admit it was thier mistake before making me jump through hoops and spend extra money?
Anyway, get it straightened out, it could bite you down the road otherwise. Good Luck |
