Since just about everyone is buying an Ipod or some sort of MP3 player, the next step is hooking them up in your truck. I know there are lots of different types of interface modules out there. Is anyone using one in their class truck?

Lets see what ya got...

I dont have an ipod but I do have a shaft radio with an imput in it, made for ipods, mp3 players, cd players and such. I use it for my cd player and run a cable and just plug into that jack. Thats what I have and use. Not sure if this was what you were asking but figured I would tell what I have. Here is the best pic of the stereo I have.

Not in my '79 but in my Burb I have a Pioneer DEH-980BT head unit with iPod adapter--provides direct connection so there's no issue with an FM modulator. Works with my 80GB iPod and also with my Nano. The head unit also has bluetooth so I can stream audio from my PDA or phone if for some reason I want to.

Simple setup here.
I have the iPod mini with a Monster iCarPlay™ Wireless Plus FM Transmitter/Digital Tuner

Nice alternative, they can be as cheap as $50 (new) on ebay

This is supposedly a great place to buy adapters for vehicles to attach an iPod, XM or other integrated peripherals into newer vehicles, but you might find some for older vehicles as well: http://www.logjamelectronics.com/

FM modulators are notorious for poorer sound quality. Direct wiring is always better when possible. The adapters at logjam facilitate direct wiring.

I use a direct wire that pugs into where a disc changer would normally go on the back of my JVC headunit. It plugs directly in to the headphone jack of my Ipod

I just have a CD player in the 67 for now... no antenna on the truck. I have XM in my Z71 and I'm thinking about getting a second one for the 67.

My Ipod & my XM are hardwired into the CD changer outlet of the stock GM/Delco unit in my Tahoe.

i have a alpine head in the cadillac with the ipod adapter wire run into the glovebox, i love this setup because the alpine allows me to control the ipod through the head unit and it charges the ipod.

The classic radio company that most of the vendors carry, can't
recall their name, USA something I think, now have a model with
I-pod hook ups on the back of it, everyone is heading that way.

you can get a casset tape at wally world for >$10 and plugs into headphone hack of mp3 player .....works good

What I have is the stock am/fm that came in my 77. Saying that it sucks is being very kind. I have no intentions of doing anything with it, but I want to leave it in place for "the look".

I want something I can hide that I can hook my Ipod to. I have been looking at XM radios but it appears all the smaller units are designed to be add ons....

Ken, have your factory radio re-done. There are companies out there that specialize in modern-izing old radios with all new internals and power levels. This way you get classic/factory looks with modern sound and technology. It cost around $3-400 to have it done.

simple setup here, stock radio in the concorde (can only imagine the wiring behind this sucker) and use a Lyra from RCA, and utilize the SD slot with a 1Gb card (even though it's doesn't support that size - it works fine) and an FM transmitter from iRiver. It's a pain in the ass to plug in and unplug, but I figured it would result in less damage/theft to the car that buying a CD player with MP3/WMA support. The transmitter kicks butt! I've had people outside the car tune in on my MP3 player...from a fair distance!

I got my Bro a Iriver Clix MP3 player with that FM transmitter for Xmas. I love Iriver products.

The only problem I see with this set up is the stock radio is the week link. I need a head unit of some sort that I can run by remote. I think bigblock73 has the best suggestion so far. I hate to waste money on the factory radio, but if someone can put new electronics in it, this might be an option.

Ken, I will be doing this in my '73...if I beat you to it (highly unlikely), I'll let you know how it works...if you beat me to it...I would love to hear your feedback. From what I have heard, this is a very slick setup...and will sound excellent...you can even have the shop do MP3 hookups as well.

If your stereo is new, it will have an aux plug, buy the adapter at Wally World and plug it in, my 07 Dodge has the plug on the stock radio, it'll play the daughter's iPod and the XM radio, just plug and play. At .99 cents a song, you can download a CRAP LOAD of songs and never worry about a scratched CD again!!
