My friend has some ?'s I can't answer

Saw a 72 Chevy truck…….appeared to be a stock restoration, had a big block, fender badges said 400. Chevy never made a 400 BBC, and the 400 SBC wasn’t around in 72 as I recall. So is the 400 badge because they didn’t like 402 badges?

Re: My friend has some ?'s I can't answer

Stock big blocks in the 70-72s only came with "400" emblems

400 badged trucks had the 396 or 402 depending on the year.

Full sized cars (Impala,Caprice) were the same also. 400 could be a sbc400 or a bbc402.

actually, in 69, the badge woulda said 396, it wasn't untill 70 that they badged it as a 400, even though it was a 402.
And as indicated, the 400 small block wasn't installed in a truck untill 73.

Re: My friend has some ?'s I can't answer

From what I have read Chevrolet called the 402 a 396 in 1970 because of the reputation of the 396 in cars such as the Camaro and Chevelle. I myself own a 70 C-10 swb 2wd with a factory big block. The options list on the glovebox door listed the truck with "396 cu in." and the Truck had 396 badges. Although a sticker on the radiator support said "402 cu in 350 hp".

Re: My friend has some ?'s I can't answer

Here are pictures of the labels I mentioned and a picture of my vin tag. I cannot verify the originality of the 396 emblems, the truck had been painted by a previous owner in the past so they may have been 400s originally.
