Cop tires, Cop shocks ?

While riding in the back of a police car on the weekend I got to thinking.
It was an older, retired police car, '95? maybe. We were heading TO the bar in it, and the back doors didn't open from the inside. Kind of like some weird flashback; but I digress.
Anyways I could pick this thing up for under $2K. It's a Caprice, runs good for buddy.Cop V8, 4sp auto, rear disks I think. ( I didn't bend over to look, I should have things like that are easier if your hands aren't cuffed behind your back ). He even has a "Puke Proof Seat " if I want it. I don't spose the rear end would just slip into place Tho.. Anyways any thoughts , experience, tips, or warnings appreciated... Oh and "Seasons Greetings" to all

Cop cars are not usually good vehicles to buy, they have been driven hard, spend 95% of their life idling, have been used as a 4x4, have been airbone more than once, have been washed with a hose inside many times. And usually don't have a car fax. What you don't see could hurt you. The caprice was a fast car, and had a stouter suspension, hence no caution getting air on those steep hills at 120mph+. Buyer beware. Now if you could find one driven by , say a Lieutenant, or Captain, that would be a better buy.

North Dakota auctions off Highway patrol vehicles a couple of times each year. They seem like pretty nice vehicles compared to the vehicles that local police departments use. I don't think that they get the abuse that local police vehicles do.

A 95 could very well have the LT1 in it. If that's the case $2,000 would be a great deal IMO.

If that car is an old RCMP car then it will have the LTI ( which would be great engine for one of our trucks) and they had 10 bolt 3:08 rear ends with posi and no it wont just bolt into your truck, but could be made to fit. Because your bud only wants 2000.00 for the car and it has the rear puke seat I'm thinking its an old Saskatoon City Police car and they had the "weenie V8 " in them and they are pretty tired when the city is done with them. The Mountie cars are highway driven and are in generally better shape when they are auctioned off. If the car has dual exhausts its an LT1 ...

Bob's right, when I was a cop I ragged the hell out of the my patrol car(Crown Vic). It's not that I meant to rag it, but when you're in a hurry to get to a call or chase a car down the first thing that popped into my head was that this isn't my car and it's not my gas. I would pass.

Thanks for the feedback. I know an old cop car is a roll of the dice, but when you're buyin used you never really know, right. I have the whole week off so I might pop the hood, do some measureing, and try figure out where this unit spent it's previous life. I figured if I could rip it's running gear & electronics out and sell the shell to a cab driver for spare parts it'd be a good upgrade from a 2bbl 305/ th350 with 6 bolt drums. But then what to do with the 305?...... That's how it starts you know. I once sold a set of nice corvette rallies 'cause I was afraid I'd buy a car to put them on.

The only upside to a cop car I can see is that it has been serviced.Other than that like they said it a crap shoot.Might be a deal if you were going to sell the vehicle you put it in.Remember not all cop cars were built as pursuit cars.However most were used that way.

OK, here is how I see it, when I was a cop I did the same thing I ragged the Crap out of them, however on the flip side if it was a Highway patrol vehicle probably say more Highway time and wasn't ragged out as much, either way you can use the brakes off of it, The calipers that is with very little modification. Most cop cars only have these few added things, larger radiator, larger breaks, OIL COOLER, TRANS COOLER, larger stronger alternator and but really no more motor performance upgrades than those of the standard car that came from the factory dealership. Just my two cents.
