Question Air Cond. dilemma - vote here!

Here's the dilemma: An air cond. system that still works, but not well, with a small leak somewhere, that was changed over to new variety coolant 3 years ago using a changeover kit from a parts store, that does not really get that cold even when re-filled. Is it worth trying to salvage a 31 year old system, or would it make more sense to go with a new system from Old Air/Vintage Air? Also, how much of a job is it to change over?

Fix factory system if it all there.....Old air sells the parts to update to R134 with a new POA valve that converts the sytem to a cycling. Or go with the old parts and try the duracool. Check first hose...then the condenser in front....then compressor front seal.

Keep the factory ac and up grade it to a 80's model condensor, and get rid of the poa valve. I have done this to my 71 and it has 134-A also. The upgrade is cheap compared to buying all new stuff. The 80's model cleans up the fender also some, it adds the acumaltor and does away with the drier. You can see pics of it in my signature. Either one has them but the pictur trail has close ups.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

I put a whole new system in my truck from Vintage. The work i had to have done cuz i dont know JACK about ac stuff. They had to fab some stuff for the lines running to the (brain fart) thingy in the front of the truck. That was a costly rig since they had to do some modified lines and welding. All in all i think with parts and everythign it was 1400 bucks and i kept the old Frigidare compressor. Thing is cold enuf to make my mom and girlfriend complain all the time and i've got no tint so there ya are. Good luck but i'd say like the others fixing the leak and flushing the system will be your cheapest fix.

Thanks guys! Hey Andy, when the new board gets going, you'll have to give us all a good step by step tutorial on this AC upgrade. I'm sure there are others besides me that know nothing about AC systems. I'll have to get more details to figure it out myself, but thanks for getting me something to go on. Buy the way, I like your truck, especially under the hood!

THE CHANGE OVER WASN'T THAT HARD TO DO. The parts are fairly easy to find, are you can buy new. All of the hoses fit together also.The only thing I should have done is cut the commpressor hose so it didn't curl up like it does. I'm planning on changing the evaprator some time to a late model one when I find one that will work with the hose fittings on the right side.
