Is it possible to have the small hump w/ a 4-spd 4WD?
Ordered some carpet from Chevy Duty (Classic Parts) to finish off my interior. I have a '74 K20 with a 4spd and transfer lever on the hump.
In their catalog they list "small hump" for 2wd and column shift cars, and "large hump" with use in 4wd floor shift cars. I ordered the 'large hump' version - and I don't know how big the "large hump" is but when I installed it there is a TON of material and I can't get the carpet to fit right over the hump. It's just WAY to big. Anyone have any problems or run-ins with this? I'm not sure if I have a poorly manufactured carpet, or if there is some other "large hump" car and mine should be using the 'small hump". What I've seen posted in other threads the large hump was used in 4WD cars, but would it be possible for a 4-spd 4WD car to have used the small hump? I'm nervous about ordering again because I've already cut this carpet so I'm stuck with it. Thanks! |

wtf 4wd cars???????
the 4wd hump is about 4" taller than a 2wd floor board, the 2wd 4spd hump it even slighty differnt yet again. unless you cut in a 4wd hump it will suck. you need to take up the spacesome how. unless you know a carpet man that can melt a seam correclty you arte stuck with the extra material. |

Re: Is it possible to have the small hump w/ a 4-spd 4WD?
Why would they make the carpet this wrong? There is A LOT of extra material; it's not just a little bumpy, I would say there is 2-3 inches of extra material on the sides and on the top; it's like something 2 inches taller and 2 inches wider could fit under this carpet.

Typically carpet kits I've seen and used are not sold as perfect fits. What your describing sounds normal to me, but comparing that to their description you shouldn't have to cut off the excess to fit. If you have the 4 spd sm465 then you would have the large hump. The small hump wouldn't fit with that trans from what I understand. |

Re: Is it possible to have the small hump w/ a 4-spd 4WD?
I've installed tons of carpets over the years, most of them ACC, and I can say I've never seen this one be this bad before. There is usually some trimming and finesse but I can say for sure this carpet doesn't fit. It's either made incorrectly, or it's not the right carpet for my truck.
Blink32 - can you do me a favor and measure from the top of your hump to the bottom of your dash? I think right where the 4spd trim ring is right about under the dash. That might help. |

Does the truck have a body lift?Hump bolt to the floor or is it one piece?Cab could have been switched.

Re: Is it possible to have the small hump w/ a 4-spd 4WD?
Truck is not lifted as far as I know. I've only owned it about 8 months and just really started doing anything with it. The hump is bolted to the floor.
They say a picture is worth 1000 words, so here goes (blink32 you can see where I measured) You can see on the passenger side how bunched up the carpet is here. Since this carpet has an edging you can't trim on the sides: Here are two shots of the drivers side, look how bunched up the carpet is. I can grab a handful of carpet on this side, and probably another fingers worth on the other side. You can see how the excess carpet bunches all the way over to the accelerator pedal: Here you can see where I measured; it's about 6 inches from the side of the trim ring to the lower part of the dash. |

went out and measured to and from the same points you used. I came up right around 6 3/16" - 1/4 . Either we both have the low-hump trans tunnels or you got a goofy carpet. But I've seen the cab floors of non-4spd's and the tunnel was much lower.

Re: Is it possible to have the small hump w/ a 4-spd 4WD?
That is definitely a high hump cab, and mine is a similar distance from the shifter to the dash, just under 6" for me.
I'd tend to say you got a goofy carpet. Can you trim more off the sides, and just put a bead of hot glue along the cut seam to keep it from fraying? Also, based on what I remember my old carpet to look like (been years since it got tossed, need to buy a new one sometime), yours may be situated a bit too far back, I think mine had the foot pad right under the pedals, and climbed up the firewall a bit. Then again, may just be your carpet. What brand was that carpet again?

I would think that the pad should be farther up, I'll take a picture of mine in the morning. Its an '85 but it should give you an idea.

Re: Is it possible to have the small hump w/ a 4-spd 4WD?
Thanks for all the feedback. I'm considering trimming the sides and see if that's better.
One thing to consider is that the "Hump" for the bench seat is also molded into the carpet, and that part fits perfectly. So if I were to move the carpet forward it wouldn't fit on the center hump, and it would be out of alligment for the bench seat as well. Since this was somewhat temporary I haven't tucked the carpet under the firewall pad, either, so that may be causing a but of an illusion - but I agree it's farther back than the original. I could live with that if the rest of the carpet fit right. The brand is ACC (Auto Custom Carpets) that's the box it shipped in. I'm begining to think I have a wonky set but I'm worried about ordering another... Last edited by Corellian Corvette; 01-01-2007 at 06:14 AM. |

Re: Is it possible to have the small hump w/ a 4-spd 4WD?
Maybe give Captkaos on this forum a PM. He is a vendor on this board, and I know he sells carpets for these trucks. He only sells the very best aftermarket products that are available, and you are pretty much garaunteed to get something that fits properly.
Heck, I need a carpet for my truck, which is the same basic thing as yours (I hate the floor mat I have now) and even though it is goofy, and already cut, I might be willing to buy the ACC carpet off you for now. I am building a new cab up, which will have a black 81+ Silverado / Sierra Classic interior in it, and will buy a nice carpet, sound deadening etc for that truck, so I'm not too concerned about having a goofy carpet in my truck, just so long as I have something. Lemme know how much you'd want shipped to me here in Alberta, Canada, if you decide to get a new, better quality carpet from Captkaos....

Re: Is it possible to have the small hump w/ a 4-spd 4WD?
I did PM Captkaos and haven't heard back.
I'm pretty sure my car is a small-hump car. My sister has an 83 Suburban 4WD automatic car. I was checking it out yesterday, and the hump in her car is MUCH wider than mine. It's not taller per-se, but it is a TON wider - the hump on her car goes almost all the way to the accelerator pedal - just about where the carpet is bunching up on my car. So, for whatever reason I'm pretty confident this car has the small hump. So either the descriptions for "large hump" and "small hump" are incorrect in the catalogs, or my car is wierd. I'll report back after ordering the small hump carpet. |

Re: Is it possible to have the small hump w/ a 4-spd 4WD?
I can gauarantee you that you have a high hump cab. Unless your truck has a bodylift, there is no physical way to fit an SM465 / 205 combo under a low hump truck cab. The cab would literally rest on the top of the transmission, or on the transfercase. As far as width goes, I've never heard of a wide and narrow hump before, and I've seen a whole lot of these trucks...
I'll go out to my shop and measure the width and height of my 4x4 cab's hump, then do the same on my 2wd's low hump cab...

Re: Is it possible to have the small hump w/ a 4-spd 4WD?
Well, I just went out to snap a couple pics, and found that my camera is stone dead... Hold off on ordering a second low hump carpet until I can get you measurements of the 3 different styles of floor humps that I know of (I have an example of each, lol), then you can measure, and decide what to do from there.
Also, don't order until you hear from Chris, and maybe even shoot him an email at captkaos@charter.net if he doesn't respond to his PMs. It'd be well worth buying a quality carpet, then you can be sure you won't have any trouble getting it to fit properly. My offer of buying your old carpet still stands, you'll see why when I post pics of the K25 tommorow, lol

Re: Is it possible to have the small hump w/ a 4-spd 4WD?
Here are some pics of my "short Hump Cab" it was originally a 3 on the tree truck.
My 80 GMC 4x4 was a tall hump which had room for a TH350/NP205 combo. I don't have any digital pics of it but have some photos in an album I could show ya if ya wanted to swing by since your so close. You can definately tell the difference. What I see in your pics is a tall hump.

Re: Is it possible to have the small hump w/ a 4-spd 4WD?
That cab is one of the three different cab hump variations I know of. That one has a low hump, without any hump where the transfercase would sit, just like what my 80 had originally.
I cut out that entire floor piece, and bolted in a high hump, with a hump for the transfercase, which is the second variation I've seen. The third I found in my 81 cab, it has a transfercase hump, but a low transmission hump. While I don't doubt they exist, I've never seen a high hump cab without a transfercase hump. Again, I'll head outside in about 10 minutes here to grab a few pictures with measurements for you
