why...ground straps

Why did the factory use uninsulated ground straps vs regular insulated wire? Should I order new straps or can I just use wire? If I need the straps which vendor sells them.

Re: why...ground straps

The ground straps are no danger if they touch anything, so they do not require insulation. I would use braided ground straps vs regular wire. I am not sure who has them.

Re: why...ground straps

Well if I can I would rather use wire since I have a roll of 2 gauge and tons of ring terminals. No money spent. I know there is no danger with it not being insulated but I think they look like crap and don't see why they would be any better than regular wire. I'm doing a frame off and don't really have any of the old ones left.

If you are using 2 GA then it will handle more than any braided will. Go ahead and use it, I say. Especially since its FREE!!!!!

Re: why...ground straps

NAPA and most parts stores sell the factory or "universal" grounding straps.

Re: why...ground straps

I don't think it makes any difference which you use so long as it's grounded. The most overlooked part of auto wiring is grounding.Without good grounds some of the electrical is prone to problems. Also good grounds keep the system from grounding back through other components which could cause shorts and possibly fire.

Re: why...ground straps

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think there would be a problem but then again why do they make specific "ground straps" then?
