How Common?
Alright guys I happened to look at my 72 today and it has a 12 bolt rear end. How common were these in 1/2 ton trucks? Were most of them 10 bolts or Dana 44s? Or were they pretty common? Thanks, Justin

Re: How Common?
I'm pretty sure the standard rear is a 12 bolt.
Every chevy truck i've owned (86 and older) had a 12 bolt, and all my camaros had 10 bolts.

Re: How Common?
Ok so the 44 would be rare? Also, I've asked this before, but what gears would it have, with an original 3 on the tree? I thought it might be a 10 bolt, maybe a 44 before, so would that change gear possibilities or should it have 3.07s? Thanks again, Justin

Re: How Common?
Don't know on the pickups but the Blazers got 3.73s standard with the 3-speed. Autos got the 3.07s.

Oh, I see said the blind man. I thought the Dana was a 10, not sure why, oh well. It was a 350 with a three on the tree.

Re: How Common?
Alright, the DANA is a 10 bolt I just looked it up on LMC. I guess that's why I thought it was a 10 bolt, cause it is.

Re: How Common?
the dana is not refered to as a 10 bolt though... that is just how LMC describes things. A 10 bolt is a GM rear.
Don't take LMC's word as gosple, it'll bite you in the 12 bolt. Most of the 1/2 ton trucks got the GM 12 bolt rear. In the 2 wheel drive side of the house, I've never seen anything other than 12 bolt rears. |

Re: How Common?
I'm not sure what the rule is about this, but I have a 68 short step that my father in law bought new and it has a dana, althought my 68 shart fleet has a twelve bolt.

Re: How Common?
let me revise this, the 68 step is a GMC with leaves if that makes a difference.

Re: How Common?
As far as I know, the only rear ends used in these trucks were a 12-bolt or a Eaton correct? The GM Corporate 10-bolt (8.5" ring gear) didn't come on boeard till the early 80's. And I dont thing GM ever used a D44 in the rear of any of these trucks...In the front, yes, but not in the rear...But yes, a GM 10bolt and a D44 both have 10 cover bolts...I think Dana 60 has to cover bolts too...

Re: How Common?
Wait a minute, fellas. GMC pickups in '67 and '68 are quite a bit different than Chevys. The standard rear axle in the 1/2 tons was the Dana 44, with a non-floating 6 stud Dana 60 as a heavy duty option. 3/4 tons used the full floating 8 stud Dana 60. GMC Suburbans and Panels used the corporate GM axles like the Chevys, but not the pickups.
