power steering hose routing
I just put in a new steering box (take-off from another truck), got new hoses, and pulled and cleaned my steering pump. Are my hoses routed correctly? I filled w/fluid and it seems like it has no power assist at all. Also, just for notes, I unscrewed the bigger nut on the bottom of the pump and when I pulled out the little nipple, I noticed a spring plate that seemed to close up toward the hole, but when I pushed the nipple back in and tightened it down, it went back into place, not sure if I screwed something up there, it didn't seem so.

Re: power steering hose routing
I saw that thread, but the pics aren't clear where the hoses go to the pump.

Re: power steering hose routing
Well, according to the LMC catalog, I've got the hoses routed correctly. I can't figure out why I have no power steering. It's not whining or making any odd noises. The hoses are brand new.

Re: power steering hose routing
Bret, have you put the front end up on jack stands, started it up and turned the wheel back and forth lock to lock? This used to be the proper way to bleed the steering system of air. I assume it still is. I put a used pump on mine and it simply is not pumping. New pump time for mine.

Re: power steering hose routing
I'll give that a try. Thanks Boog. If that doesn't work, it'll be new pump time for me also I guess.

Re: power steering hose routing
both hose's go thru the rear part of the bracket.. looks like you might have some universal hose there..
there's more than likely something amiss with the check valve behind the fitting where the high pressure hose connects to. Last edited by rage'nrat638; 07-12-2007 at 06:59 AM. |

Re: power steering hose routing
So is that hose the return line then if there's a check valve behind the fitting? I thought that was the pressure line.

Re: power steering hose routing
hmm, then something must be amiss. When I pulled the nipple fitting out, that check valve flapper popped back towards the hole and the spring held it flush against the inside of the opening. When I stuck the nipple fitting into it, the opening of the nipple was the only thing pushing it in. Should it be offset? As it was, it looked like the plate from the check was sitting flush against the nipple, so if pressure was applied it would force itself closed onto the fitting. Is there a certain way that I need to re-install that fitting before hooking up the pressure line?

Re: power steering hose routing
I've got power steering!!!! YaY!!!! I guess I just had to cycle it through the pump. Also didn't realize how much fluid that box holds! I had it up on jacks, and cycled the wheel like 20 times, then shut down, added fluid, repeated, and went through a quart & 1/2 of fluid! Boog and Rage'n'Rat, thanks a million for the help!! I truly appreciate it. This gets me one step closer to completion. Now I can mock my fenders back up so I can drive it up to my buddy's shop and start tearing it all down again.
