Re: QuadraJet Edelbrock or Holley ????
sweet truck....well i am guessing your intake is a spreadbore with a q-jet.
unless your going to use adaptors or change the intake..rebuild the q-jet.. autozone has them rebuilt for 130.00 (devorced choke type) SWEET TRUCK YOU CAN UPGRADE NOW TO... heres the hot tube choke q-jet. i converted to electirc choke on my truck one pump and a click..and were driving Last edited by rage'nrat638; 07-12-2007 at 06:59 AM. |

Re: QuadraJet Edelbrock or Holley ????
I have your identical truck (orange and white 72 cheyenne). i would go with the quadrajet. its the best in performance and economy not to mention....a direct replacement.

Re: QuadraJet Edelbrock or Holley ????
rochester would be my choice, if your throttle shaft isnt worn, rebuild it and go with it, holleys in my eyes tend to run rich and should have the power valve saver check ball installed, edelbrock would be second choice ,holley being last, my opinion only

Re: QuadraJet Edelbrock or Holley ????
If you have the Original quadrajet and it's rebuildable (throttle shafts in good condition, etc.) I would say rebuild it yourself. DO NOT BUY A REBUILT CARBURETOR FROM AUTOZONE, NAPA, O'REILLY, OR WHATEVER PARTS STORE YOU HAVE IN YOUR AREA. Mass produced rebuilt carburetors are junk no matter where you get it. If you decide to take your chances and go this route, at least hold on to your old carburetor for a while before you turn the core in; that way you have your orignial to rebuild after you put 4 or 5 rebuilt ones on and finally get tired of that.
If you don't want to rebuild it and don't know a good carburetor man, Edelbrock makes a quadrajet replacement that even looks like an original quadrajet. They are brand new but can be pretty expensive. I've got a 600 cfm Holley square flange carburetor with Electric choke, on an Edelbrock Performer manifold on my truck and I'm real happy with it. My truck did not have the original carb on it when I bought it so that was not an option for me. The edelbrock performer carburetor is a good, simple, reliable carburetor too, but I'd probably go with a Holley over one of those. Or you could convert it to Tuned Port Injection and be done with it! Last edited by kevenj; 01-17-2007 at 11:57 PM. |

Re: QuadraJet Edelbrock or Holley ????
I am running an Edelbrock carb on a Edelbrock intake. I would have rebuilt the q-jet, but didn't have the time/patience to do so.

Re: QuadraJet Edelbrock or Holley ????
qjets are awesome but not alot of people seem to make them work well. I agree do not buy a rebuilt as they are crap. I would try the edelbrock qjet ( i havent tried one yet) unless you can rebuild it yourself. If you have a little time and want to learn, buy the rochester book and you will know everything about carbs and qjets, it is well worth the time.

Re: QuadraJet Edelbrock or Holley ????
My Holley Street Avenger on the Performer intake works great. And most new Holley's come with power valve blowout protection now.

Re: QuadraJet Edelbrock or Holley ????
I personally rebuilt my Q-jet a few years before I replaced the motor (& went to an aluminum intake). I believe a kit was $10 at the parts store. I did it according to the instructions and it ran great afterwards. (First time I ever rebuilt a carb and it was simple.)

Re: QuadraJet Edelbrock or Holley ????
Honestly there is not much to a qjet to get wrong. Read the instructions and clean it real good and put it on, set it and leave it alone. Constant tuning is not necessary with a qjet. Great carbs and better mileage too with those small primaries.

Re: QuadraJet Edelbrock or Holley ????
Q-Jets are easy to rebuild and i've been told that they are the next best thing to fuel injection when tuned right. If not the Q-Jet, then Edelbrock.......

Re: QuadraJet Edelbrock or Holley ????
I vote holley. They take some adjusting, but when set up right, they kick @ss. Best 250 bucks i ever spent was to buy the 500 holley for my truck.

Re: QuadraJet Edelbrock or Holley ????
when I upgraded to a SBC I used the 1979 4MV that came with it. my neighbor had an original 72 Qjet from his old truck but they didnt have elec. choke. I recalibrated mine to the 72 specs and it works wonderful.
(I had to go elec. choke due to lack of EFE valve with headers.) |

Re: QuadraJet Edelbrock or Holley ????
Rebuild the q-jet. Kits aren't expensive, and you learn something in the process. I rebuilt my Holley and it was pretty staight forward. I would have to make adjustments when the weather turned cold tho'. It would tend to run rich in the winter.(especially when I would forget to let off on the manuel choke,DOH !!)
