cowl hood and carb tray type setup

in some of the more serious racing apps i have seena large sheet metal tray/scoop type deal to forcibly guide the air [typicaly from a hood scoop] to the air cleaner. it basicaly creates a air ram and incoming air has nowhere to go but in the carb.

?????????

1 has anny tried that on a cowl hood, say a 4-6" hood.

2 do you think it would help or hurt the air flow in a cowl hood setup where the air is being sucked off the windshield and not forced down a scoop.




i have the tools and materials to do it, i just wanted an oppinion on the idea.

trkklr77, I've no personal experience, but I think I've got a pic kinda like your describing. This pic, from Car and Driver magazine, shows the engine bay of the #19 Dodge Intrepid of Everham Racing.

The concept behind this is at higher speeds, the cowl area becomes pressurized with cool fresh air. The air cleaner is fabbed from sheet metal, and in the pic above you can see the intake at the base of the windshield, which acts as a sort of "dam" to build up this pressure.

I would think this is the same concept used with functional street cowl hoods. However, street vehicles do not have the restricted frontal air intake sources, as race cars carefully manage airflow in the front.

Just because the air is coming in backwards does not mean that it isn't pressurized.
