Power steering for 60-66 4x4

What steering gears will work on these years of trucks. My manual box is shot, so I figure I will put power. Thanks in advance, Jeremy.

You can use a newer one but will have to modify the frame for the power steering box

I'll have to get a pic, but the stock box has a bracket rivited to the frame. I was hoping for a bolt in but I know thats impossible!

you might look at the early 70's dodge and international 4x4 trucks.the ps box uses a mount to attach the box to a flat frame.i would go with this set up over the gm unit.i think the units are made buy saginaw,which are what the gm boxes are

Yeah its a saginaw, Its hard enough to find old chevy parts. I can't imagine trying to find a dodge, or even an old international. But it gives me something else to look at! Thanks, Jeremy.

I think you have to mod the Pitman arm with the dodge or IH boxes as well.

I have done several power steering conversions on '63-'66 Chevy trucks, both 2wd and 4x4, as well as 1/2 ton and 3/4 trucks. The easiest conversion on this era trucks is the 1/2 ton 2wd truck followed by the 4x4 and 3/4 ton trucks, due to the amount of modifications to the power steering backing plates available in the aftermarket, as well as the steering link and steering column.

The conversion requires a Saginaw power steering gear box for a '69-'87 GM Truck, along with a power steering pump and associated brackets for mounting to your engine, V8 or straight six, two groove crankshaft pulley, pressure hose, return hose and appropriately sized belt. In 1976, GM changed the fittings on the Pressure hose and Return hose to metric, so I stay with the pre-'76 Saginaw power steering gear box. This is a good one-stop-shop for all the required parts and for the price of gathering the required parts individually, it is a savings:

Here is a great link, illustrating the play-by-play of the conversion. Although popular belief is the conversion can not be done on the 4x4 trucks or 3/4 ton trucks, I have personally done it, based on the same principles I utilized on the 2wd, 1/2 ton conversions.

I also developed a power steering conversion plate kit, based on what is available in the aftermarket, except I had mine fabricated from 1/4" stainless steel, chrome spacers and use Grade 8 fasteners, in lieu of the mild steel, painted backing plates and standard-duty hardware in the other kits. I like the stainless steel appearance, even though you can not see much of it. Also, I v-groove, weld, smooth and paint the steering shaft after shortening, instead of using the coupler that comes with many of the kits. This is a more professional method and more visually pleasing over looking at a coupler that looks out of place.

Doing a search on google for "'60-'66 Chevy Truck Power Steering Conversion" will give you numerous results, that are all very good sources of information for doing this conversion. I have personally done the conversion on several of my 4-5-6 Chevy Trucks and it is one of the best modifications I could have done for driver comfort and convenience, especially when trying to park.

Here are a few photos of a conversion I did on a '66 Chevy K10 lwb fleet, using my own stainless steel conversion backing plate kit. On this conversion, I welded the backing plate on the driver side of the frame rail, but the mounting hardware is sufficient and is the recommended fastening method.

Tony, I bought those plates from you awhile back. Great product! I really enjoy driving my 61 4x4 with power steering. For any one who wants to know, I used all power steering parts off of a 84 k-10 and Tonys power steering brackets. It was an easy mod to do!!
