Cab Swaping!!
When the cab we own just isn't fixable, we might turn to another cab. I have a 71 shortbed, but also have an rust free 70 cab. Can i really swap the vin tag from my 71 cab to my 70 and keep the 71 vin tag, titled, (meaning not spend the extra money to title the 70 in my name). I noticed that when searching for cabs, I found a man who sold cabs that were from the west coast with no vin or title. The man said get a vin tag and attach it. I said what if I have a 71 tag and you sell be a 68...there has to be noticable difference. What's your thought. Keep it tagged 70 with all my 71 drivetrain underneath...or the good ol swap a roo?

Re: Cab Swaping!!
The ruling here in MD is that the VIN must match the majority of the parts. If you are replacing the cab, it is acceptable to use your VIN plate.

Re: Cab Swaping!!
I wouldnt advise buying a cab with no vin or removing one,Its a no-no to tamper with the VIN.

Re: Cab Swaping!!
Removing or altering the vin plate is a felony in most states. Contact your DMV or state police and they should tell you what to do. If you have titles for both vehicles, it shouldn't be any problem, but will probably require the state to attach a new vin plate.

Re: Cab Swaping!!
Check your local laws with the MVA. I had to research it here in MD when I rebuilt a salvage vehicle. I bought a 95 Impala SS that was salvaged. I used the frame and front clip from my 95 Caprice. The MD State Police here told me that the Majority of the car is the salvaged one, so I had to use that VIN. My father has worked in a body shop since 1970, and he said that back in the 70's if they had a truck hit bad enough, the insurance companies would sometimes have a used cab replaced. The owner would not have to re-title the vehicle, that would not make sense. Replacing the cab is much like replacing a fender or any other part. It just happens to be where the VIN is located. I am sure that it may be different in other States, so check with them, But that is the way it works here.

Re: Cab Swaping!!
Legally - NO
Common Sense - How would the DMV know, if you didn't tell them? I will withold my opinion on the matter, but will offer some advice. If you decide to pursue the swap, do not offer this information to anybody.

Re: Cab Swaping!!
Thanks, but I was also wondering about the special rivets. If so, what do you do when you paint the truck another color, tape off the vin tag? I'm sure some like to remove it.

Re: Cab Swaping!!
If you are going to swap VIN's,you need to re install it with a certain type of rivet, correct? I agree, what ever you choose, dont tell.Certainly not on a public website
